Abstract: Various application are provided for an enclosure having a first wall and two or more second walls surrounding a cavity. The enclosure also has an inlet and outlet each in fluid communication with the cavity. The second walls each have at least a portion shaped such that a force acting on the first wall tending to deflect the element causes an amplified deflection of the second walls into the cavity. Such applications include a pump, a structure comprised of one or more enclosures, structural elements, and apparatus for storing and releasing energy.

Abstract: Compressive and tensile structural elements are disclosed having an enclosure with walls surrounding a cavity. A non-compressible material is disposed in the cavity. The walls are shaped such that a force tending to compress or elongate the element by a first deflection causes an amplified second deflection of the walls into the non-compressible material. The second deflection exerts a compressive force against the non-compressible material, resulting in a resistance to the first deflection and the force tending to compress or elongate the structural element. The walls of the elements are configured for optimum rigidity and/or optimum damping. Structural beams and motion impartation devices utilizing the structural elements to provide lightweight rigidity and/or damping are also disclosed. Another aspect of the present invention are methods of fabricating the structural beams.

Abstract: A modular shock isolator and method of isolation of components of a system with multiple modular shock isolators arranged to provide different damping and vibration characteristics than an individual modular shock isolator. In one mode, a modular shock isolator having a base with legs extending from each side of the base with each of the legs having a foot that extends outward from the legs with the modular shock isolator either individually mounted to isolate a component or a plurality of modular shock isolators are be ganged, or stacked together to change the shock isolation characteristics of the shock mount formed from the multiple modular shock isolators. A layer of damping material can be sandwiched between layers of elastomers to dampen the natural spring-back of the materials.

Abstract: A tensile system for attachment between a first body and a second body having relative movement with respect to each other includes at least one tensile element attached to the first body and at least one collapsible energy cell coupled between the tensile element and the second body. The collapsible energy cell includes a buckling elastomer spring and has a normal state when the buckling elastomer spring is unbuckled and a collapsed state when the buckling elastomer spring buckles. The tension variations in the tensile element apply a compressive force to deflect the buckling elastomer spring.

Abstract: A compression spring formed from an elastomer member having a ratio of plastic strain to elastic strain that is greater than 1.5 to 1 is disclosed. The elastomer spring member defines an elongated axis between opposed ends of the spring and has a molecular structure. A periphery of the elastomer member has a series of axially spaced annular portions of increased cross-sectional area with an annular waistline portion disposed between adjacent annular portions of increased cross-sectional area to provide the elongated member with a series of axially spaced hourglass configurations arranged in end-to-end relation relative to each other. The hourglass configurations along the periphery of the elastomer member allowing the elastomeric spring to collapse upon itself during compression thereof while maintaining a substantially constant outside diameter for the areas of increased cross-sectional area. The internal molecular structure in each annular portion of increased cross-sectional area along with the annular waistline portion being oriented in a predetermined manner during precompression of the elastomeric member to eliminate any compression set characteristic of the elastomer material.

Abstract: The invention relates to a spring device capable of softly dissipating the energy of an accelerated mass which is relatively great with respect to the inert mass of a reference system coupled to said spring device. The force deflection curve of said spring device exhibits an abrupt steep rise within the linear working range of the force deflection curve so that the required deflection is reduced. The spring device can include a soft suspension spring coupled to a control spring.

Abstract: A shock absorber support rail is formed of an elongated, stiff, but springy, plastic extruded strip that is M-shaped in cross-section. The M-shape is turned on its side and its legs are substantially parallel. The converging legs of the V-shaped center portion of the M-shape form a central, acute angle apex where they join and they form upper and lower apices at their junctures with the parallel legs. The converging legs are bent to form integral leg parts that are angled at different acute angles relative to the axis of the M-shape, so that the spring rate may be varied during compression of the parallel towards each other. The strip has the same spring rates per unit length along the full length of the strip. Thus, pieces of predetermined length may be cut off the strip to form separate support rails, each of a predetermined spring strength dependent upon its particular length. A number of rails of required strength, that is, of predetermined lengths, may be positioned between an article to be supported and a support surface for absorbing shock loads and vibrations transmitted therebetween.
