The compound has formula (I): wherein the dotted line represents a carbon-carbon single bond or a carbon-carbon double bond; one R1 represents a hydrogen atom and the other represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group; X representing a C═CH2 or C═CHCH3 group or a CHR2 group, each R2 representing a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group; and R3 represents a a group of formula CR4═C(R4)2, or a group of formula each R4 representing a hydrogen atom or a methyl or ethyl group. The compound is in the form of a pure enantiomer or a mixture thereof.

Processes and compositions are described for the use in foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste and medicinal product flavor and aroma and perfume aroma augmenting, enhancing, modifying and imparting compositions and as foodstuff, chewing gum, toothpaste, medicinal product, perfume and perfumed article aroma imparting materials of 1-(3,3-dimethyl-2-norbornyl)-2-propanone (hereinafter referred to as the "norbornylpropanone derivative") having the structure: ##STR1## (which structure is intended to cover both the "endo" and the "exo" isomers thereof). Addition of the said "norbornylpropanone derivative" to consumable materials is indicated to produce:(a) In foodstuffs, foodstuff flavorings, chewing gums, toothpastes and medicinal products, fruity/berry, pine needle-like aromas and sweet, fruity/berry, blueberry-like, pine needle-like, pine balsam flavor characteristics; and(b) In perfumes, colognes and perfumed articles sweet, berry, weody, piney, mint aroma notes with a damascenone-like character and buttery and minty nuances.

A process for preparing 1-[1,5-di-(3,3-dimethylnorborn-2-yl)-3-pentyl]-1,5,9-triazanonane from 1,5-di-(3,3-dimethylnorborn-2-yl)-3-pentanone by reaction with ammonia to form, after reduction, 3-amino-[1,5-di-(3,3-dimethylnorborn-2-yl)pentane]. This latter compound is reacted with acrylonitrile, reduced, and the diamine product again reacted with acrylonitrile and again reduced. Alternative routes wherein the ketone is reduced to the novel alcohol and optionally the novel halide and either then reacted with 3,3'-iminobispropylamine to form the desired polyamine are also shown.

A process for the preparation of a mixture of compounds of the structure ##SPC1##Is disclosed whereby a Pi-halotricyclene having the structure ##SPC2##Where Y is chloro, bromo or iodo is reacted with an alkali metal cyanide to prepare the corresponding nitrile; the nitrile is reacted with diisobutylaluminum hyhdride to prepare the corresponding aldehyde, a nortricycloekasantalal which is then condensed with butanone to prepare the above mentioned mixture of compounds. Also claimed are the product ketones which are useful for altering the aroma of consumable products including perfumes, perfume compositions and perfumed articles.
