    Abstract: The invention provides a process for stabilizing plaster and an apparatus for implementing the moistening part of the process. The process comprises the following steps: a) providing a heated HH-plaster preferably at temperatures over 100° C.; b) feeding the hot plaster in a moistening device having walls heated to at least 100° C.; c) injecting water and/or steam into the moistening device in conditions that such not yet moistened surfaces of the plaster are exposed to the injected water and/or steam; d) maintaining an atmosphere in the moistening device at a level of the dew point in the range of 75 to 99° C.; e) feeding the moistened blend into a curing device; f) maintaining an atmosphere in the curing device above 75° C. for at least 3 minutes; g) feeding the moistened and cured blend into a drying device; and h) drying said moistened and cured blend.The invention also provides an apparatus for moistening β-hemihydrate plaster comprising a rotating drum with lifting blades inside where all walls in contact with the product are externally heated at a temperature above 100° C.

    Abstract: Apparatus for calcining wet powdery gypsum which comprises:(A) a furnace which generates a hot gas having a temperature higher than 900.degree. C;(b) a straight cylindrical hot gas supply pipe connected with the gas outlet of said furnace and having a tapered upper portion;(C) a straight cylindrical high stream velocity pipe connected with the tapered portion of said hot gas supply pipe;(D) a vortex chamber connected with the upper part of said high stream velocity pipe, which has a diameter bigger than that of said high stream velocity pipe and has tapered portions both at the gas inlet and outlet;(E) a wet powdery gypsum supply pipe connected with the side wall of said vortex chamber, said gypsum supply pipe being connected in such a way that a projected extension of the lower edge of said gypsum supply pipe, following the same angle as that pipe, would intersect the center axis of said vortex chamber at a point higher than the bottom of said vortex chamber and lower than 1/2 H from the bottom of said vortex chamber;(F) a heat transmission pipe connected with the gas outlet of said vortex chamber; and(G) a collector connected with said heat transmission pipe. This apparatus produces calcined homogeneous gypsum.

    Abstract: An apparatus and process for calcining gypsum is disclosed which utilizes a flash furnace for rapidly calcining fine particulate gypsum while the material is suspended in a stream of hot gas. The method and apparatus utilize a two-stage suspension preheater for utilizing waste gases from the calcining furnace for preheating raw material to be calcined and a two-stage suspension cooler for cooling hot calcined gypsum which is discharged from the calcining furnace. Spent cooling gas is supplied to the preheater for use in preheating the fresh gypsum to be calcined. The invention also contemplates recirculating a portion of the gypsum discharged from the furnace back to the furnace for further calcination. Hot product may be discharged directly from the furnace.
