    Abstract: A hammer module (11) for a dot matrix line printer including a cantilever mounted multi-arm hammer (23) formed from a single piece of resilient ferromagnetic material is disclosed. The multi-arm hammer (23) comprises a plurality of hammer arms (25) each including a thin spring region (51) and a thick head region (53) that lie in a plane that forms a slight angle with the plane of the base (27) of the multi-arm hammer (23). Each module also includes magnetic circuits for each hammer arm (25) formed by a common permanent magnet (13), a post (19), an arm (29) of a flux plate (15) and an arm (33) of a return plate (17). The post (19) is mounted on the tip of the flux plate arm (29). The flux plate and return plate arms (29 and 33) lie in parallel planes located on opposite sides (poles) of the permanent magnet (13). The posts (19), flux plate arms ( 29) and return plate arms (33) are sized and positioned such that the tip of the posts (19) lie coplanar with the outer surface of the return plate arms (33) and such that a gap exists between each post tip and an associated return plate arms (33). The head regions (53) of the print hammer arms (25) are positioned to be attracted to the post tip and the adjacent area of the return plate arms by the magnetic flux created by the permanent magnet (13) when coils (21) wrapped around the posts (19) are not energized. This attraction pulls the head regions 53 across the small gap created by the slight angle bend of the hammer arms (25). Thus, the thin spring region (51) of the hammer arms (25) is stressed, cocking the print hammer arms. When a coil (21) is energized, it produces a magnetic field that counteracts the permanent magnet attraction force, releasing the associated, cocked hammer arm (25). Releasing of the cocked hammer arm (25) impacts a ball (49), welded to the side of the hammer arm remote from the pole tip, against a ribbon to create a dot on a print receiving medium.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a hammer assembly for a high speed impact printer of the type comprising a solenoid including a coil and an axially-apertured pole piece, the pole piece having a conically-shaped recessed surface, an axially movable armature within the solenoid, the armature having a tapered conical leading surface facing and substantially parallel to the recessed surface of the pole piece, and a hammer, one end of the hammer being rigidly connected to the armature to form a unitized armature/hammer element for striking a print element in the printer, the hammer extending through the aperture in the pole piece. The present hammer assembly achieves, when compared to previous designs, a longer stroke, an increase in impact energy, a reduction of rebound and settling time, an increase in hammer life expectancy, a decrease in cost, improved reliability and a reduction in weight.

    Abstract: Print smearing observed in double wide hammers can be controlled and reduced by providing the impact face of the print hammer with a concave cylindrical radius of curvature wherein the cylindrical axis is parallel to the vertical font direction. The radius of curvature is chosen according to impact energy and font velocities. In other embodiments, the timing of impact between the hammer and font characters may be offset such that the center of the print column leads the center of the impact hammer at the time of impact. In another embodiment, the radius of cylindrical curvature may be ground off center from the center line of the print hammer by a predetermined offset.

    Abstract: A case member and a resilient supporting member are removably coupled to each other. The case member has a mounting portion mounted on a traveling member, which includes a carriage of a printing apparatus. The supporting member includes first and second portions which are formed integrally from a leaf spring material, and can be deformed elastically. A printing hammer, a bearing member supporting the hammer, a solenoid coil member for driving the hammer, a spring member used to return the hammer, a hammer socket receiving an impact from the hammer, and a shock absorbing rubber plate are coupled together and held between the case member and the supporting member. As the printing hammer moves to its return position, it abuts against the hammer socket, thereby moving it in a returning direction. Returning energy received from the hammer is transmitted to the first portion of the supporting member through the rubber plate, to be absorbed between the rubber plate and the supporting member, on the one side, and to the second portion of the supporting member, which is directly in contact with the hammer socket, on the other side.

    Abstract: A print hammer for a high speed impact printer using a movable type-face-carrier, e.g., a rotatable printwheel. The print hammer is designed to enable rotating the printwheel for character selection purposes during the return stroke of the print hammer from impact position back to its rest position.     Abstract: An electro-magnetic print hammer comprises a single magnetic hammer element in which an impact mass is coupled to a pivotted armature by flexible stem. The hammer-stem has (N+1/2) periods of oscillation at its resonant frequency during the free flight time of the hammer mass. A permanent magnet with a strong magnetic force which decays rapidly with distance holds the hammer element fixed upon motion of the armature until the armature torque exceeds the magnet holding force to cause the hammer mass to break loose with a snap action. Stop means prevents armature impacts with the operating pole piece of a stator core. The visco-elasticity of the armature stop matches the rebound characteristics of the print medium when impacted by the hammer mass.

    Abstract: A guide and alignment member for use in serial printing devices. The guide member makes possible a sizable increase in the number of type that may be printed in a given time frame. As the type elements approach the printing impact zone at high speed, some of them may still be oscillating from a previous impact, or may be misaligned. As these misaligned or vibrating elements move towards the impact zone, the guide member brings these elements into registry with the printing hammer. The result of this guiding process allows for greater speed of operation, since the type elements will be prevented for interfering or otherwise colliding with the striking hammer.
