The invention concerns a ski boot/ski binding combination with an adapter for various sizes of ski boots consisting of a plate-like part and an underside attachment member. The ski boot is removably fastened on to the plate-like part of the adapter. The attachment member serves as the mounting support for the adapter on the ski by means of spring-loaded ski binding parts.The attachment spans in the longitudinal direction of the adapter plate over a length corresponding to the metatarsus and the front tarsus area of the skier's foot in the ski boot. This provides the skier with support in the major stretching part of his foot when walking with the adapter.

A safety ski binding having a horizontally pivotal sole plate provided with a heel holder for the heel of a ski boot and two two-arm sole holders pivotal about sole holder axles to the sole plate. One of the two lever arms engages the edge of the sole of the toe portion of the ski boot. The movement of a second one of the lever arms is restricted by a locking and control element controlled by a stop surface provided on the housing. The second lever arm is released beyond a specific angle of traverse during an outward pivoting of the sole plate. The locking and control element is arranged pivotally on an axle located between the two sole-holder axles. The locking element is approximately heart-shaped and has support surfaces engaging the two sole holders. A housing for the toe part of the binding is longitudinally movable and the control element is a rod extending forwardly into a cavity provided in the housing, which rod engages a stop surface in the housing in a pivoted position of the sole plate.

A snap lock modification which can be applied to various types of present day releasable ski bindings in which one component of the binding is connected to or forms a part of a ski boot and the other component is attached to the ski. One of the components includes latch means movable from inoperative position to latching position in engagement with a receiver formation on the other component. A resilient force unit is adjustable after the boot is in place to yieldingly urge the latch means into engaging position to retain the boot in position during normal maneuvers and to release the boot in response to excessive loads produced during a fall. The modification provides a detent trigger which restrains the action of the loaded force unit and which is actuatable upon placing the boot in skiing position to release and allow the latch means to snap into latching engagement with the receiver formation.

The spring locking device is composed of a seal which is positioned in a blocking relation with respect to the adjusting member and will be either totally destroyed if an effort is made to adjust the force of the spring or at least reflect that the adjustment has been tampered with. The seal can be in the form of a member which is press fit into an opening adjacent the adjusting member or it can be cast or poured in a liquid form and subsequently solidified in the opening adjacent the adjusting member. In addition, the seal can have an identification indicia placed thereon to reflect the last skilled person to make the adjustment to the spring force.

Possibly, a single flat metal member may be used to provide the anchoring members, or the rods may be interconnected by a perforated metal plate.

A holding mechanism for holding ski boots onto a ski. The holding mechanism is comprised of a longitudinally extending rod extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sole of a ski boot and has at least one crossbar thereon with conventional elements for engaging and holding the boot to the crossbar. The longitudinal rod is secured at one of its ends to a holding element secured to the ski. The holding element restricts the longitudinal movement of the rod while simultaneously permitting lateral movements thereof. The longitudinal rod serves to rigidify the sole of the ski boot thereby making it possible for the ski boot to be made of a flexible material to improve the walking characteristics thereof.

A safety ski binding wherein the boot is releasably mounted on a sole plate, which in turn is releasably secured to the ski so as to be released therefrom upon the application of forces of predetermined magnitude and direction. The sole plate may be mounted on the ski by two pairs of mounting elements, one of said mounting elements in each pair being carried by said sole plate, the other mounting element in each pair being adapted for mounting on said ski. Said pairs of mounting elements may be positioned in fixed spaced relation on opposed sides of the longitudinal center of said sole plate with at least one of said pairs being positioned inwardly of the adjacent end of said sole plate. The means for mounting the boot to the sole plate may be adjustable to accommodate a range of boot sizes. A portion of the mounting elements may be formed integral with the ski or template means may be provided for positioning of said mounting elements on said ski in fixed relation for use with a range of boot sizes.

The restrictor disengages the heel end from the heel receptacle based on a predetermined release force, and permit lateral outward displacement of the heel end upon disengagement of the heel.
