A braking device for a gliding board, such as a ski, that includes a plate adapted to be fixed on an upper surface of the gliding board; two braking arms movable between a gliding position and a braking position; and two flanges, each guiding a braking arm. Each flange is rotationally movable in relation to the plate about separate axes of rotation.

A ski brake, which is mounted on the ski and provided with two brake arms, one on each side of the ski, which brake arms by spring action can be turned to a catching position, in which the brake arms extend downward, substantially perpendicularly to the ski.The invention is characterized in that the ski brake consists of single piece of material, and the resilience is obtained by utilizing the design of the sheet metal material, a.o. reinforcing grooves.

A holding plate is secured on the top surface of a ski and pivotally supports a support frame. The support frame is a piece of wire material bent preferably into the shape of a square or an omega, the sections of which are preferably coplanar and at least one section of which serves as the pivot axle therefor. A torsion spring encircles said one section of the frame, has two legs with eyelets which respectively grip adjacent sections of the frame, and has a central section which rests against the holding plate. An operating pedal is releasably mounted on the support frame by resilient fastening clamps fabricated from the material of the operating pedal, at least one fastening clamp being engaged with each section of the support frame other than the section serving as the pivot axle. A pair of braking arms is pivotally supported in the pedal, and the pedal is pivotally movable between a braking position in which the free ends of the braking arms extend downwardly below the bottom of the ski and a retracted position in which such free ends are positioned above the top surface of the ski.

A heel-release binding pivotally secured to a base plate which is in turn slidable on a set of rails fixedly secured to the upper surface of a ski along the longitudinal axis of the ski. A ski brake is pivotally secured to the base plate and is movable therewith. The axles supporting the ski brake for pivotal movement extend inwardly of the base plate. Notches are provided in each of the rails on the ski to facilitate the movement of the base plate longitudinally of the ski. A support flange is provided on the heel-release binding and is positioned to be engaged by the holding arms of the ski brake only when the holding arms are urged from the upright braking position toward the retracted downhill position. The holding arms are readily pivotal between the retracted position and the braking position without necessarily requiring a pivotal movement of the heel-release binding when the ski boot is not engaged with the heel-release binding.

The invention proposes a braking device for a ski, particularly for braking a ski which has become detached from a ski boot and continues to run on, on its own, said device having a double-armed brake stirrup, whose arms can be tilted about an axis which runs at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the ski and which extend in the inoperative position along opposite sides of the ski, the arms being tilted into the braking position by the action of a spring, in which position the ends of the arms on one side of the axis project downwardly into the surface over which the ski is running and the ends of the arms on the other side of the axis, which are joined together and are intended to be pressed down by the ski boot, are tilted upwardly after separation of the ski boot from the ski. The spring for tilting the stirrup is tensioned between said connected ends of said arms and a mounting plate, defining a line of action extending substantially through said axis in said inoperative position. Additionally a leaf spring is provided engaging with said stirrup to initiate operation of said device by said spring means.

An improved ski brake having a pair of blade members which extend laterally with respect to the ski and are pivotally supported against spring force about an axis which extends transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the ski. The two blade members are connected through a stepping plate and are held in the downnhill retracted position above the sliding surface of the ski by the force of the ski boot pressing downwardly thereon. The ski brake is composed of a section of spring steel wire having two portions thereof bent at 180.degree. to form the blade members. The ends of the spring steel wire are received in flanges on a base plate secured to the ski, which flanges have control cam surfaces thereon and which terminate in a locking recess. The ski brake is held in the braking position when the end portions of the spring steel wire are located in the locking recess.

A structure for a use in either an anti-crossing device for skis or a ski brake. A torsion spring is utilized to urge a projection member to an upright position on the ski. In the anti-crossing device for skis, the resilient projection member will prevent movement of a ski to the crossed position in one direction while simultaneously permitting movement of the ski in the opposite direction by flexing the resilient projection downwardly onto the upper surface of the ski. In the ski brake environment, the ski boot effects a resilient flexing of the projection member down onto the upper surface of the ski when the ski boot is mounted between the ski bindings. The resilient projection member has extension members which project below the lower surface of the ski when the resilient projection member is in the upright position.

A ski brake has a main spring element mounted upon the upper surface of a ski and resiliently biased into an operative position when the ski is released from the ski boot to bring into play at least one brake element, e.g. a blade. In order to protect the brake against impact with stones or the like, an additional spring element is provided between the actuator, which includes a pivotal member received in a mounting plate on the upper surface of the ski, and the blade or brake element so that the latter can yield on impact while retaining its braking function to prevent free flight of the ski.

A ski brake for bringing a lost ski on a ski slope to a halt, comprises arms which pivot under spring action into an operative position in which a pointed front end of each arm digs into the snow when the ski boot leaves its bindings. Insertion of the ski boot in the binding causes a pedal to be depressed onto the ski and the pedal moves the arms back into an inoperative position almost parallel to the ski. The rear end of each arm is hollow and contains a spring-loaded piston which bears on a cam. In one embodiment the cam is fixed relative to the ski, and the piston and the arm pivot around the cam surface under the action of the spring when the pedal is released. In another embodiment the cam is part of the arm and forms a pivot mounted to rotate in a bearing in a part of the ski. The cam is pivotted by the spring-loaded piston which in this embodiment is slidably mounted in a sleeve fixed relative to the ski.
