Abstract: A mechanical chest compression system for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation includes a resuscitation device and a controller operatively coupled to the resuscitation device. The resuscitation device includes a base, a contact portion configured to be in a superposed relation with an anterior surface of a patient when the patient is disposed on the base, and a force sensor configured to generate a force signal during compression and decompression of the anterior surface of the patient. In particular, the contact portion is movable relative to the base to provide compression and decompression to the anterior surface of the patient. The controller includes a processor configured to receive the force signal generated by the force sensor; estimate chest compliance relationship using the force signal; and generate instructions using the chest compliance relationship to drive the contact portion to provide compression and decompression to the anterior surface of the patient.

Abstract: A system for assisting with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) includes an active compression decompression (ACD) device configured for a user to push downward and pull upward on a chest of a patient, a sensor to measure force applied to the chest of the patient, a sensor configured to measure displacement of the chest of the patient, one or more processors, and a user interface. The processor is configured to configured to execute computer-executable instructions to determine a maximum compression force applied to the chest of the patient during a compression cycle and a maximum decompression force applied to the chest of the patient during the compression cycle, estimate a displacement value for a total displacement of the chest of the patient during the compression cycle for compressing and decompressing the chest of the patient, and estimate at least one of a compression depth and a decompression displacement for the compression cycle.

Abstract: A system for monitoring performance of a resuscitation activity on a patient by an acute care provider is provided. The system includes: a first wearable sensor configured to sense movement of a first portion of an acute care provider's hand; a second wearable sensor configured to sense movement of a second portion of the acute care provider's hand; and a controller. The controller is configured to: receive and process signals representative of performance of a resuscitation activity from the first sensor and the second sensor; identify from the processed signals information indicative of at least one of a relative distance, a relative orientation, a change in relative distance and a change in relative orientation between the first sensor and the second sensor during performance of the resuscitation activity; and determine at least one resuscitation activity parameter based, at least in part, on the identified information.

Abstract: Systems and methods related to the field of cardiac resuscitation, and in particular to devices for assisting rescuers in performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are described herein. The system includes a chest compression device having force sensing capabilities, for providing feedback in enhancing the quality of acute care. The force sensor(s) may exhibit varying resolutions over different dynamic force ranges, for example, to provide information helpful to the resuscitative treatment. Chest compression devices that are able to sense force may be able to assist a system in providing accurate chest compression depth and rate information, as well as assess the amount of work exerted by one or more rescuers during the course of resuscitation. Force sensors described herein may employ relatively inexpensive components, such as pressure sensors, emitters, optical detectors, simple circuit boards, springs, compliant/resilient materials, electrically resistive layers, force-sensitive materials, amongst other suitable parts.

Abstract: Example defibrillator electrode assemblies compression assemblies are described that may be dimensioned and configured for use on a patient despite physical constraints that limit the area or locations on a patient onto which an electrode assembly may be placed. A cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) assembly is also described that protects a patient with a transthoracic incision from further injury during application of CPR compressions proximate to the incision.

Abstract: A system for facilitating resuscitation includes: a first electrode assembly having a therapy side and a first motion sensor; a second electrode assembly having a therapy side and a second motion sensor; processing circuitry operatively connected to and programmed to receive and process signals from the first and second motion sensors to estimate at least one of a chest compression depth and rate during administration of chest compressions and to compare the chest compression depth or rate to a desired range; and an output device for providing instructions to a user to administer chest compressions based on the comparison of the estimated chest compression depth or rate to the desired range. One or both of the electrode assemblies may be constructed so that the conductive therapeutic portion is able to maintain substantial conformance to the anatomy of the patient when coupled thereto. For example, at least a portion of the flexible electrode pad may be able to flex from a more rigid sensor housing, or the sensor housing itself may be relatively small compared to the flexible electrode pad so as not to cause lift off of the therapeutic side from the patient.
