Abstract: A method and apparatuses for rate control of a multi-quality data stream using multiple, combined probing techniques includes receiving a multi-quality data stream, adding padding packets to the multi-quality data stream to determine which data stream of the multi-quality data stream to select to communicate data packets of the multi-quality data stream, adding probing packets to the selected data stream of the multi-quality data stream to determine a bandwidth at which to communicate the selected data stream, and communicating the selected data stream to receivers using the determined bandwidth. In some embodiments, the method and apparatus can further include determining whether or not a different quality data stream of the multi-quality data stream should be selected before adding padding packets to the multi-quality data stream and/or determining if a bandwidth estimation process should be performed before adding probing packets to the selected data stream of the multi-quality data.

Abstract: A method and apparatuses for full sender-side rate control include receiving a data stream at a forwarding unit, determining a bandwidth estimation for communicating the data stream between the forwarding unit and a sender of the data stream, determining respective bandwidth estimations for communicating the data stream between the forwarding unit and at least two receivers, aggregating the bandwidth estimations determined for communicating the data stream between the forwarding unit and the at least two receivers, and limiting the bandwidth estimation determined for communicating the data stream between the forwarding unit and the sender of the data stream based on the aggregated bandwidth estimations. In some embodiments, the bandwidth estimation determined for communicating the data stream between the forwarding unit and the sender of the data stream is limited by communicating a limitation message regarding the aggregated bandwidth estimation of the receivers to the sender.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining a padding budget for improving bandwidth estimation of data streams encoded with variable bitrate include receiving a data stream having a variable bitrate, comparing a bandwidth estimation determined for a communication path between a data stream forwarding unit and an intended receiver of the data stream to a padding threshold. If the bandwidth estimation is less than the padding threshold, the padding budget is determined by subtracting a bitrate of the data stream from the bandwidth estimation. If the bandwidth estimation is not less than the padding threshold, the bitrate is compared to a padding baseline. If the bitrate is less than the padding baseline, the padding budget is determined by subtracting the bitrate from the padding baseline, and if the bitrate is not less than the padding baseline, no padding needs to be added to the data stream to be communicated to the intended receiver.
