[Class 46] In a filter of the type comprising a casing containing upright filter members spaced from one another and cleaning means such as scrapers in contact with the filtering surfaces, the scrapers are carried by a plurality of separate independent travelling supports, each cooperating with a plurality of scrapers, and means are provided for synchronously reciprocating the supports up and down to cause the scrapers to travel between the top and bottom edges of the filter members. In the construction shown, hollow filter elements consisting of screen filtering surfaces such as 5 are provided with outlet nipples 6 adapted to fit in sockets in an outlet manifold 7. The elements are positioned between guide pins 25, 26 provided on arcuate members 22 secured to the filter casing 1. Each member 22 is formed with a boss 21 screw-threaded to receive a vertical screw shaft. These shafts 8, 9 are adapted to be driven through bevel gearing by means of a crank handle 19 whereby the members 22 are reciprocated. Lugs 27, 28 in pairs are provided on the members 22 to provide accommodation for the ends of bars 29, each bar at its ends having pins 30 connected to the ends of flexible scrapers 31, 32. The scrapers are pressed towards the filter elements by means of springs 36 on pins 37 provided over the bars 29. By the operation of the crank handle 19 the scrapers are caused to clean the whole exterior surface of the filter elements. These elements are provided with handles 41 and may be held firmly in place by means of an adjustable channel-shaped member 44 provided with slots for engaging shoulders on the handles.
