Abstract: An impulse unit having a variable torque output and suitable for use in an impulse tool having a housing and a motor, is rotatably mounted in the tool housing and driven by the tool motor. The impulse unit comprises a casing assembly having an impulse cavity therein which is filled with a liquid and a spindle having blade means mounted rotatably with respect to the casing assembly. The blade means carried by the spindle divides the cavity into high and low pressure portions. A regulator valve is provided in the impulse unit to control the torque output of the unit and varies the size of an orifice or passage connecting the high and low pressure portions of the impulse cavity. The cavity, spindle and regulator valve may each be of simple cylindrical configuration.
