THERE IS DISCLOSED A METHOD FOR PREPARING AN AQUEOUS DISPERSION FROM A FREE ISOCYANATE GROUP-CONTAINING POLYURETHANE PREPOLYMER MADE FROM DIISOCYANATE AND POLYOXYPROPYLENE POLYCOL OR POLYOXYBUTYLENE POLYOL. THE PREPOLYMER IS REACTED WITH A DEFINED TERTIARY AMINOPOLYCOL, E.G., METHYL DIETHANOLAMINE, IN THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROXYL-CONTAINING, NONIONIC SURFACE-ACTING AGENT AND WATER. THE RESULTING AQUEOUS DISPERSION OF POLYURETHANE IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL AS A COATING FOR VARIOUS SOLID SUBSTRATES.
