Abstract: An image control system for a can decorator includes an electronic can decorator control assembly, a mechanical can decorator control assembly and a number of sensors. The electronic can decorator control assembly includes a programmable logic circuit and a number of modules. The mechanical can decorator control assembly is structured to be, and is, operatively coupled to at least one of an ink fountain ink application adjustment assembly, a ductor roll assembly duty cycle adjustment assembly, a printing plate cylinder assembly axial adjustment assembly or a printing plate cylinder assembly circumferential adjustment assembly. The electronic can decorator control assembly is structured to be operatively coupled to the mechanical can decorator control assembly. Each sensor in the number of sensors is structured to measure a can body applied image characteristic and to generate an image signal including data representing the can body applied image characteristic.

Abstract: A printing plate pressure adjustment system for a can decorator including a printing plate cylinder assembly having a printing plate cylinder drive shaft, and a blanket wheel. The system, includes an actuator, a control system structured to control operation of the actuator to adjust a pressure, between the printing plate cylinder assembly and the blanket wheel, an eccentric bushing disposed around the printing plate cylinder drive shaft, wherein rotation of the eccentric bushing causes the printing plate cylinder to move toward or away from the blanket wheel, and a drive mechanism coupled between the actuator and the eccentric bushing, wherein operation of the actuator causes the drive mechanism to rotate the eccentric bushing.

Abstract: A ductor roll assembly for use in an ink station assembly of a can decorator for communicating ink from a fountain roll to a distributor roll. The ductor roll assembly having a roll portion including an elongated axial member and a plurality of segments selectively disposed on and around the axial member axially adjacent each other for rotation about a rotation axis. The plurality of segments includes: a number of ink transfer segments, each ink transfer segment having an ink transfer surface disposed at a first radial distance from the rotation axis and structured to transfer ink between a corresponding axial portion of a fountain roll and a corresponding axial portion of a distributor roll; and a number of spacer segments having a second outer diameter less than the first outer diameter.
