摘要： A printer that partially cuts roll paper to leave an uncut portion prevents paper jams from reversing the roll paper. A printer 1 has a print unit 41 for printing images on roll paper R; a cutter unit 46 disposed downstream in the conveyance direction from the print unit for cutting the roll paper and leaving an uncut portion; a conveyance unit 42 for conveying the roll paper in the conveyance direction or a reverse direction that is the opposite of the conveyance direction; and a controller 40 that executes a reversing process conveying the roll paper in reverse by the conveyance unit 42 when the roll paper is separated from the paper roll at the uncut portion after the cutter unit 46 cuts the roll paper, and not executing the reversing process in specific circumstances in which the roll paper remains connected through the uncut portion.

摘要： In sensor determination processing, each of a transmission-type optical sensor and a reflection-type optical sensor detects a label position, and first transport for transporting the printing medium is executed so that a first label position, which is detected by a first sensor succeeding in detecting the label position first, arrives at a printing position. When the first transport is terminated before a second sensor being another sensor succeeds in detecting a label position during the first transport, a first sensor is determined as a sensor to be used for detecting a label position. When the second sensor succeeds in detecting a label position during the first transport, a sensor succeeding in detecting the first label position or a second label position detected by the second sensor, which is closer to the printing position, is determined as the sensor to be used for detecting a label position.

摘要： When the user operates a paper feed button 9c while the access cover 11 is open (steps ST1, ST2), the printer 1 moves the printhead 12 from the printhead-down position 12D to the printhead-up position 12U, and moves the second paper feed roller pair 31 from the nip state to the nip-release state (step ST3). When the access cover 11 is then closed, the printer 1 returns the second conveyance roller pair 31 to the nip state, and returns the printhead 12 to the printhead-down position 12D (steps ST4, ST5). The operation for changing the second conveyance roller pair 31 between the nip state and the nip-release state is therefore intuitive, easily understood, and simple for the user.

摘要： When the paper loaded in a printer is changed to a different type of paper, the paper setting in the printer can be easily updated without a paper mismatch error occurring. When the paper is replaced or the paper setting is changed in the printer 1, the cover 3 is first opened, the roll paper 12 is removed from the roll paper compartment 11, and the cover 3 is then closed. A paper settings update command from the host device 32 is received and executed when no roll paper is loaded. After the command is executed, the cover 3 is opened, new roll paper 12 is loaded, and the cover 3 is closed. The printer 1 then indexes the newly loaded paper for printing, and executes a paper identification process to determine if the newly loaded paper matches the content of the current paper settings.

A printer for executing a printing process based on print data sent from a host computer has a rewriting unit for executing a firmware rewriting process, a print unit for executing processes other than the firmware rewriting process, a rewrite command interpreting unit for detecting a rewrite command that precedes the transmission of rewrite data required for the firmware rewriting process, and a control unit for executing the firmware rewriting process with a priority over all other processes when a rewrite command is detected.
