Abstract: A method for authenticating and/or identifying a security and/or valuable document comprising a sheet material, wherein the sheet material can be physically altered and comprises a substrate, at least one interlaced thread structure at least partially embedded in the substrates, the method comprising the following steps: mechanically altering the sheet material so as to expose a portion at least of the interlaced thread structure, and deducing the authenticity and/or identity of the document at least by observing the exposed portion of the interlaced thread structure.
