Abstract: A method and a User Equipment (UE) for identifying fake 3G/LTE networks is disclosed. The method includes starting a timer corresponding to an authentication failure; determining if a fresh request for authentication is received from a network; checking if there is an authentication failure in a lower layer if the fresh request is not received from the network; stopping the timer if there is the authentication failure in the lower layer; updating a count value for the authentication; comparing the count value with a pre-set value; and barring a cell if the count value is greater than the pre-set value.
