    Abstract: A process for recovering gamma -cyanobutyraldehyde from the acid hydrolysis mixture obtained by the acid hydrolysis of Nsubstituted gamma -cyanobutyraldimine is disclosed, wherein the gamma -cyanobutyraldehyde is extracted from such acid hydrolysis mixture with methyl ethyl ketone, nitromethane, dichloromethane, chloroform or 1,2-dichloroethane. The extraction process of the present invention allows much lower amounts of solvents to be used than were used in previous prior art processes, and the gamma -cyanobutyraldehyde is readily separated from the solvent.
