A method of forming a continuous ribbon of cheese from precheese is described. A conveyor belt system is used, modified to retain and transport the liquid precheese which, over the course of conveyance, solidifies to form the continuous cheese product discharged at the end of the conveyor.

A novel positive traction permeate tube and fittings therefore are described for use in spirally wound membrane filtration elements for filtration and separation applications. Membrane filtration elements incorporate the novel permeate tube. Methods of making the novel positive traction permeate tube are also disclosed as are the preferred sanitary stainless steel materials used for the sanitary tube and fittings. The novel permeate tube involves a sanitary tubing having two open ends, each with an end fitting. The end fittings engage a positive traction drive for high tension spiral winding of a membrane element spirally around the novel permeate tube. Membrane filtration elements made with the novel permeate tube are less subject to slippage and breakage during manufacture and can withstand higher pressure drops and flow rates during use without failure of the spiral wound membrane element. The positive traction permeate tube facilitates membrane replacements.

An apparatus for mixing viscous liquids with a reactant, catalyst or coagulant and then finishing such mixture is described which involves forming a viscous first fluid into a thin film by passage through an annulus, then injecting a second fluid into the flowing liquid to form a mixture which is thereafter finished downstream of injection of the second fluid. The mixture from the mixer is finished using a finisher associated with and downstream of the mixer. Injection may be through either annulus-forming surface or both in various patterns. The particular mixer and finisher described are adapted for use in the uniform mixing of rennet and precheese. The mixer and finisher are adapted for modification and facile disassembly for cleaning to maintain sanitary standards.

Longitudinal extension and consequent destruction of spirally wound membrane modules arranged in paired axial alignment within a pressure vessel of an ultrafiltration unit are prevented by a pair of end-cap anti-telescoping devices (ATD's) and a central ATD. The central ATD is an integral assembly of a perforated circular steel plate and a solid interconnector that is concentrically disposed at its hub section with tubular ends protruding on each side of the plate and having an outer peripheral groove for an o-ring near each end for sealingly engaging the ends of a pair of membrane modules. Longitudinal extension of the spirally wound membranes is prevented by a plurality of axially protruding lugs that are concentrically disposed on each side of the plate for engaging the proximal ends of the permeate tubes and by the flat, circular faces of the central ATD engaging the ends of the membranes. Each of a pair of end-cap ATD's is rigidly attached to a circular interconnector on one side, facing the distal end of one membrane module, and is rigidly attached on the other side to one end of a permeate outlet support tube that is rigidly attached at its other end to an end cap through which a permeate outlet port axially extends. The end cap is sealingly clamped onto the end of the pressure vessel within which the ultrafiltration process is conducted. Each end-cap ATD has a flat, circular face engaging the distal end of a membrane and a plurality of circularly disposed lugs engaging the distal end of a permeate tube.
