A keyboard operated telegraph transmitter having an array of keys is provided. The transmitter includes a plurality of code bars which are shiftable by the depression of the keys and also includes switching means operatively connected to and actuated by the shifting of the code bars. The switching means includes a circuit board having a plurality of conductive areas positioned on a surface thereof, and a contact means which is secured to each of the code bars and electrically connects several of the conductive areas on the circuit board. When the code bars are shifted the movement is transformed into an output coded signal from the circuit board. Additional features of the transmitter include a parity check system, and a motion multiplying mechanism which is designed to facilitate the operation of the keyboard. Still another feature is the inclusion of three shift keys for the purpose of transmitting a maximum number of indicia with a minimum number of keys.

A timer driven by a clock motor has a multiple wire output for readout (punched holes, displayed digits, printed digits, et.). A pawl operates a ratchet wheel having a number of teeth corresponding to a desired maximum two digit number, and turns two rotary switches. One is a units rotary switch with a ring of short contacts equaling the desired maximum number. The short contacts are in groups corresponding to 0-9, 0-9, etc., with a remainder when needed. The second rotary switch is a tens rotary switch having a wiper arm which is moved over a ring of long contacts each corresponding to ten short contacts, but the last long contact corresponds to the remainder, if any. The number of long contacts equals the number of groups of short contacts, and all contacts are printed on the front face of a printed circuit board. The back face of the board is printed with conductors which connect all contacts representing like digits. Because the contacts are arranged in a ring, there is an automatic reset to zero. The maximum number may be 99 for tenths and hundredths of an hour, or it may be 59 for minutes, with the clock motor output shaft turning 100 or 60 revolutions per hour respectively. The first shaft operates the pawl of a second ratchet wheel once for each revolution of the first shaft, and the second wheel has 24 teeth. A second printed circuit board has third and fourth rotary switches driven by the second ratchet wheel one revolution a day. There are contacts for a maximum of 23 followed by reset to 00. The combined maximum then is 23.99 with reset to 00.00 for a 24 hour day. For a readout in hours and minutes the maximum number is 23:59 with reset to 00:00.

A motor driven serializer or commutator having a rotatable contact arm movable over a ring of contacts is also mounted inside the shielding compartment. There are five magnets outside the compartment moved by code bars to either of two positions, the code bars being themselves moved in conventional fashion by the keys of the keyboard. One magnet position is close to its related switch, and serves to close the switch, and the other magnet position is more remote and causes opening of its switch. The magnetic differential between the two positions of the movable magnets is increased by the provision of a magnetic shunt adjacent the retracted positions of the magnets.

The present time stamp eliminates the usual hammer and solenoid with their impact noise. Instead, a carriage is mounted for reciprocating travel along the print wheels, and an impression roller carried by the carriage serves to press successive parts of a document against the print wheels. The desired print is thus obtained by means of a quiet rolling action rather than by a noisy hammer impact. There is smooth acceleration and deceleration of the carriage, thereby further avoiding noise and vibration. There are print wheels for date, month, year and the time in hours and minutes. Most of the print wheels are moved by pawl and ratchet mechanism. A timing motor drives a cam and cam follower to operate the pawl, and the cam configuration causes smooth acceleration and deceleration of the pawl movement, which again contributes to quiet operation. The time print wheels are provided with separate readout discs. These are made of sheet material and are progressive in diameter to expose readout numerals on the outer faces of the discs near their periphery. The time print wheels have concentric hollow shafts each extending axially to its readout disc. Additional print wheels print the date, the month, and the year.

A printer which includes a movable type body and a solenoid system to move the type body is provided. The solenoid system comprises a plurality of opposing pairs of solenoids, each pair being connected together so as to provide simultaneous displacement of both solenoids in a pair when one of the solenoids of a pair is energized. The several pairs of solenoids are interrelated with respect to their relative displacements and the sum of all of the displacements is transmitted to the type body for selection of a position on the type body. The solenoid system may include a pulley system or a differential lever system for the purposes of transmitting the sum of the displacements to the type body.
