Abstract: Each ski pole of the pair comprises a tubular shaft, which has an upper portion carrying a handle and a lower portion carrying a snowhead. The handles as well as the snowheads have an extension or a recess by which the two poles can be detachably interconnected. The snowheads are symmetrically mounted on the respective tubular shafts in such a manner that part of the periphery of each snowhead is close to the associated tubular shaft and the adjacent portion of each snowhead is designed so that the two snowheads can be hooked one into the other in the longitudinal direction of the tubular shafts. Above said portion the handle of that ski pole whose snowhead has been hooked in from above is provided with a connecting element which engages at least from below the connecting element of the handle of the other ski pole to prevent a longitudinal movement of the ski poles relative to each other.

Abstract: 1,195,043. Ski-bindings. H. MARKER. 18 Aug., 1967 [14 Sept., 1966; 5 July, 1967], No. 38117/67. Heading A6D. A step-in heel holder for safety ski-bindings comprises a carriage 105 adapted to be mounted on the surface of the ski immediabely behind the heel of a ski boot, a carrier for a sole holder and pedal assembly mounted on said carriage for pivotal movement about an axis parallel to the surface of the ski from an open position ready to receive the heal of the ski boot as it is inserted into the binding to a closed position in which the heel is held in the binding against the surface of the ski, said carrier comprising upper and lower lever arms 118, 119 extending forwardly from said pivot axis and being pivotable relative to each other about said axis against the pressure of a spring, a sole holder 115 and pedal assembly 116 connected to the forward end of one of said lever arms for engagement with the heel of the ski boot; when inserted in the binding, and a catch adapted to hold the other of said lever arms, when the carrier is in the closed position, against pivotal movement about said axis, said catch being manually releaseable to permit voluntary disengagement of the ski boot from the binding and being automatically released by a predetermined upward displacement of the sole holder relative to the surface of the ski and pivotal movement of said one arm relative to the other against the pressure of said spring. The position of the carriage is adjustable in the longitudinal direction of the ski to accommodate differently sized ski boots by a screw mechanism 107. In particular embodiments in Figures not shown, the catch mechanism comprises empirically of (i) a toggle linkage constituted by two congruent over centre levers each consisting of two lever arms 121, 132 linked at the knee by pivot pin 133, (Figs. 1-4), (ii) a toggle joint consisting of two lever arms 162, 163 and a screw 164 (Figs. 5-8), modifications of which are given in Figs. 9-10, (iii) a pivotally mounted locking lever 13 (Figs. 11-12) and Figs. 13-16 illustrate a modification of (iii) wherein a resilient contact pressure of the skiing boot against a toe-holding device is generated.

Abstract: A skiing boot pusher is disposed substantially between the legs of a U- or V-shaped retaining frame and is held on the same for pivotal movement about an axis which is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the ski and parallel to the tread of the ski. The free ends of the legs constitute guides for two tension elements, by which the rear tightener is held on the ski and which act on the pusher through the intermediary of at least one spring, which spring or springs produce the force for holding down the heel and the contact pressure by which the toe portion of the skiing boot is forced against a retaining device. A safety clutch is provided between the pusher and retaining frame and prevents a pivotal movement of the two parts relative to each other when the rear tightener is ready for use whereas it is disengaged to disconnect the two parts in response to an overload. The pusher extends rearwardly beyond the axis on which it is pivoted to the retaining frame and forms a two-armed lever having a forward arm which has a free end engageable with the heel of the boot. The other arm of the lever forms a guide which extends in the longitudinal direction of the lever and is in guiding engagement with a slider, to which the tension elements are connected. Each spring has one end bearing on the slider and another end bearing on a fixed part of the pusher. The clutch member carried by the pusher consists of a pin, which is mounted in the slider. The clutch member carried by the retaining frame consists of a locking member, which can be arbitrarily released.

Abstract: 1,146,495. Toe-iron for safety bindings. H. MARKER. 27 May, 1966 [3 June, 1965], No. 23970/66. Heading A6D. A toe-iron for safety ski-bindings is characterised in that it can be swivelled about a vertical axis lying in the area of the heel, out of its normal position until it reaches either of two release positions without longitudinal movement, and does not release the foot until this angular position has been overstepped whereby the resistance of the spring is transmitted through at least one lever and an abutting member of the toeiron, which slides upon an edge of the lever when swivelling occurs, the lever and the spring being so constructed that when the swivelling occurs, the increase in the resisttance of the spring is approximately compensated for by the elongation of the lever arm between the lever fulcrum and the bearing point of the abutting member. In an embodiment, a long base plate 5 is arranged to rotate about a round plate 6, which is securely mounted on the ski 19 and lies in the region of the heel, the sole holder 7 being securely fastened to the base plate 5. A restoring mechanism comprises a cam plate 10 with a cam 24 which is held in its initial position by spring 15, and the roller 18 is supported in the pivot bearing 16, the pivots 11 and 12 being located in the end position of their associated guide slots 22 and 23. When the base plate is swivelled cam plate 10 will rotate about one of the pins 11 and 12 and the roller 9 will ride upon cam 24. The plate 5 can swivel freely about point 6 after release from the restoring mechanism. The member 8, in which roller 9 is supported, may be swivelled vertically about an axis 20 so that base plate 5 may be easily reintroduced into the restoring mechanism. Other embodiments are described in which (a) torsion springs are employed as the restoring element, whose free ends collaborate in each case with an abutting member of the toeiron and a fixed stop on the ski, and the sole holder member is pivotably supported on the swivelling plate and locked so that it cannot swivel until it reaches the predetermined angular position; and (b) bellcrank levers are employed as the restoring element, preferably pivotable about a common fulcrum, and which collaborate with one pressure or tension spring each and whose free lever arms lie around and bear upon the abutting member of the toe-iron.
