A developing processing method and an image forming method are described, which comprise the steps of (a) exposing a silver halide photographic material comprising a support having thereon at least one light-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer; and (b) developing the exposed silver halide photographic material with a developer containing a developing agent, containing substantially no dihydroxybenzene developing agent, containing an auxiliary developing agent exhibiting a superadditive property, containing a quaternary onium salt compound, and having a pH value of from 9.5 to 11.5, or a developer containing a developing agent, containing substantially no dihydroxybenzene developing agent, and having a pH value of from 10 or less.

A photothermographic material comprising at least (a) a photosensitive silver halide, (b) a reducible silver salt, (c) a reducing compound represented by the following general formula (1), and (d) a binder: Q1—NHNH—R1: Formula (1) wherein, in the general formula (1), Q1 represents a 5- to 7-membered unsaturated ring bonding to NHNH—R1 at a carbon atom, and R1 represents a carbamoyl group, an acyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an aryloxycarbonyl group, a sulfonyl group or a sulfamoyl group, provided that when R1 is propylcarbamoyl group, Q1 is not 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-4-cyanophenyl group. According to the present invention, there is provided a novel photothermographic materials showing high sensitivity, high development speed and little fluctuation of performance due to heat development temperature variation.

Disclosed are an image formation process which comprises developing a photographic material comprising a silver halide emulsion layer, and a hydrazine derivative and a specific phosphonium compound of formula (1) with a developer which is substantially free of a dihydroxybenzene developing agent, contains a specific developing agent of formula (2) and at least one p-aminophenol derivative, and has a pH value of not more than 10, and a development process which comprises developing a photographic material comprising a silver halide emulsion layer, and a hydrazine derivative and a nucleation accelerator, with a developer having a pH value of from 9.0 to 10.5 and containing a first developing agent selected from ascorbic acid and a derivative thereof and a second developing agent selected from aminophenol and a derivative thereof, wherein a solution having the same composition as the fresh developer but a higher pH value than the fresh developer is used as a development replenisher. The image formation process enables the formation of a high contrast image desirable in the field of graphic arts with a stable developer which is unharmful to an ecosystem or working atmosphere and shows an extremely small deterioration with time, and the development process is useful for a plate-making silver halide photographic material, accomplishes an ultrahigh contrast, minimizes the pH variation during running processing, and reduces the burden on environment.

A silver halide photographic material is disclosed, comprising a support having provided thereon at least one silver halide emulsion layer, at least one layer of the emulsion layer and other hydrophilic colloid layers containing at least one hydrazine-type nucleating agent having, in the vicinity of the hydrazine group, an anionic group or a nonionic group which forms an intramolecular hydrogen bond with a hydrogen atom of the hydrazine, and also containing at least one of the onium salt compounds represented by formulae (a), (b) and (c), or at least one of the amine compounds represented by formulae (d), (e), (f), (g), (h), (i) and (j). Also disclosed is a method for processing, after exposure, the silver halide photographic material described above with a developer containing a reductone-type developing agent and having a pH of 12 or less.

Disclosed is a silver halide photographic material comprising a support having thereon a silver halide emulsion layer containing at least one nucleating agent represented by general formula (N-1) shown below. The silver halide photographic material contains at least one compound represented by general formula (Q-2) shown below in the above described silver halide emulsion layer and/or in a hydrophilic colloid layer adjacent thereto which does not contain a silver halide emulsion: ##STR1## The variable terms in the above formulas are defined in the specification. The silver halide photographic material is suitable for plate making and provides a high contrast image even when using a highly stable developing solution.
