When edge smoothing is applied to a portion where trapping was applied, the two processes are applied to a small region, thus causing image deterioration. Hence, the invention is configured to exclusively set trapping and edge smoothing execution conditions. Then, even when application of both trapping and edge smoothing processes to an entire image is selected, one of these processes is applied to each individual pixel or region. Alternatively, an execution completion flag may be set for one of these processes, and the other process may be executed with reference to that flag.
Abstract:
When both of a trapping and a resolution converting process are executed, a deterioration in picture quality occurs. In order to solve this problem, an image forming apparatus is provided which performs a trapping process to expand outlines of objects whose boundaries are in contact with each other, performs a resolution conversion process to change density of edges of an image, and restricts processing so that the trapping process and the resolution conversion process are not executed to a same pixel.

A reference area around a pixel of interest is set in an image to be processed. It is determined whether a pixel not to be referred exists in the reference area. If the pixel not to be referred exists, the shape of the reference area is transformed based on the pixel. A trapping color for the pixel of interest is decided based on, a first peripheral pixel having a color component that is not included in the pixel of interest among peripheral pixels around the pixel of interest included in the reference area with the transformed shape. The density of the trapping color is calculated based on the peripheral pixels. The pixel value of the pixel of interest is corrected using the pixel of the trapping color having the calculated density in the image to be processed. The image forming unit forms an image having pixels corrected by said correction unit.

In conventional technology, it is likely that good image quality cannot be obtained because various image processing such as color processing or halftone processing (dithering processing and error diffusion processing, for example) which differs from desired processing is executed in the trapping processing or black overprint processing. The present invention has an object of obtaining desire good image quality in the trapping processing or black overprint processing, and is characterized by having a means for or a step of generating attribute information for each color plate before or during the image transforming processing.
