The invention relates to binders for cathodically depositable coating compositions for the electrocoating lacquering process using cationic synthetic resins, which binders have been obtained by polymerizing (A) 5 to 95% by weight of ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers in the presence of (B) 95 to 5% by weight of a cationic synthetic resin in an aqueous phase, the total amount of the components (A) and (B) being 100%.Esters of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid are preferable for use as component (A). The invention also relates to a process for preparing the binders and to their use for cathodically depositable electrocoating lacquers.

The invention relates to dispersions of crosslinked polymer micro-particles in aqueous media, which have been prepared:(1) (a) by dispersing a mixture of the components (A) and (B) in an aqueous medium, the component (A) being composed of one or more polyester-polyols containing at least 2 hydroxyl groups, and the component (B) being composed of one or more polyisocyanate compounds in which the isocyanate groups are at least partially in the masked form, and the components (A) and/or (B) having available a number of ionic groups, preferably carboxylate groups, sufficient to form a stable dispersion, and at least one part of the components (A) and/or (B) containing more than 2 hydroxyl or optionally masked isocyanate, respectively, groups per molecule and(2) (b) by subsequently heating the dispersion thus obtained to a temperature sufficiently high for the components (A) and (B) to react to form crosslinked polymer micro-particles.

The invention relates to a basecoat/clearcoat process in which the basecoat composition used contains as a film former a polyurethane resin which can be prepared by preparing an intermediate from(A) a mixture obtained from 10 to 90 mol % of linear polyether diols and 90 to 10 mol % of polyester diols,(B) diisocyanates,(C) compounds which contain two groups reactive toward isocyanate groups, at least some of these compounds having at least one group capable of forming anions,and the free isocyanate groups of the said intermediate are then reacted with(D) polyols containing at least three hydroxyl groups, and the reaction product obtained in this manner is transferred into an aqueous base, whereina) the polyester diol is prepared from diols and an acid component which consists of 60 to 100% by weight of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids of more than 18 carbon atoms and of 40 to 0% by weight of aliphatic dicarboxylic acids of 2 to 18 carbon atoms,b) the equivalent ratio of the NCO groups to the total of the OH groups of (A) and the reactive groups of (C) is 2:1 to 1.05:1 andc) the equivalent of the OH groups of the component (D) to the NCO groups of the intermediate is 0.5:1 to 4:1.

The invention relates to coating compositions which are particularly suitable for the preparation of the basecoat for two-coat coatings of the basecoat/clearcoat type, and which comprise organic diluents, at least one resin containing urethane and urea groups, and, where appropriate, other resins, pigments and other conventional additives in common use. The invention relates to a process for the preparation of macromonomers which carry at least two hydroxyl groups at one end. The process comprises(1) reacting a polyester, polyether, polyurethane, polyurea or polyamide prepolymer which has a number average molecular weight of 300 to 3000, preferably 500 to 2000, and contains an average of one terminal hydroxyl or amino group and at least one carboxyl group per molecule with a diisocyanate to form an intermediate which contains an average of one terminal isocyanate group and at least one carboxyl group per molecule, and subsequently reacting this intermediate(2) with a compound which has a molecular weight of 90 to 800, preferably 120 to 300, and contains at least two hydroxyl groups in addition to a group which is reactive to isocyanate groups, to form a macromonomer which carries an average of at least one carboxyl group and, at one end, at least two hydroxyl groups per molecule.

The invention relates to water-dispersible binders for cationic electrocoating finishes, which binders are reaction products of (A) low molecular weight epoxide resins containing aromatic groups and having an epoxide equivalent weight of below 375, (B) aliphatic and/or alicyclic polyfunctional alcohols and/or carboxylic acids having a molecular weight of below 350, (C) if appropriate up to 60% by weight, relative to the total binder, of polyfunctional alcohols, carboxylic acids and/or SH compounds having a molecular weight of 500-5,000 and (D) primary, secondary and/or tertiary amines and/or salts thereof or a sulfide/acid mixture or a phosphine/acid mixture, the reaction product of A and B containing 10-45% of aromatic groups, calculated as the phenylene group. By means of the binders, a higher layer thickness is obtained in electrocoating.

The invention relates to water-dispersible binders for cationic electrocoating finishes, which are obtained by reaction of(A) epoxy resins containing low molecular weight aromatic groups and having an epoxide equivalent weight of less than 375 with(B) aliphatic and/or alicyclic polyfunctional alcohols or carboxylic acids having a number average molecular weight of less than 350, further reaction of the product of (A) and (B) with(C) a polyfunctional alcohol having a molecular weight of more than 350, addition at the epoxide groups taking place so that the reaction products of (A) and (B) contain an amount of aromatic groups of from 10 to 45% by weight, calculated as phenylene groups, and further modification of the resulting intermediate with(D) primary and/or secondary amines or ammonium salts in order to achieve the required water-dispersibility. The binders contain, as component (C), 5 to 40% by weight, based on the total binder, of a linear polyalkylene ether diol which has on average one terminal primary and one terminal secondary hydroxyl group per molecule and corresponds to the general formula ##STR1## in which n denotes 1 to 4, preferably 1, and m denotes 4 to 35, preferably 5 to 20.

The invention relates to water-dilutable binders for cationic electrocoating finishes. For the preparation of the binders, a di-epoxide compound, together with at least one mono-epoxide compound if desired, is converted by a polyaddition, carried out at 100.degree. to 195.degree. C. and initiated by a monofunctionally reacting initiator carrying either an alcoholic OH group, a phenolic OH group or an SH group, to form an epoxy resin which then subsequently is modified with(A) primary and/or secondary amines or their salts and/or the salt of a tertiary amine, a sulfide/acid mixture or a phosphine/acid mixture and with, if desired,(B) a polyfunctional alcohol, a polycarboxylic acid, a polysulfide or a polyphenol.
