When it is determined whether the color of each cell of an image is black or white from the gradation value of each cell, the determination is made by comparison of the gradation level of the cell with a threshold if the gradation level is sufficiently close to that of black or white. In contrast, if the gradation value of the cell is within a gray zone, the color of the cell is determined from the colors of the cells adjacent to the cell of interest. That is, if the gradation value of the cell is gray and the colors of the adjacent cells are all black, the color of the cell is determined to be white; and conversely if the colors of all the adjacent cells are white, the color of the cell is determined to be black.

A character region detecting unit detects respective character regions in a plurality of document images which are partitioned and read. A character recognizing unit recognizes the characters within the detected character regions, and converts them into character codes. An overlapping position detecting unit detects the positions of line images whose matching degrees are high as an overlapping position by making a comparison between the positions and the sizes of the character regions in the two document images. An image merging unit merges the two document images at the detected overlapping position.

Compressed print data from a host PC is transferred to the data receiving unit, compressed print data transfer unit and compressed print data storage unit of a printer controller unit, and is transferred to a bitmap data storage unit after being restored to a bitmap by a data restoration/transfer unit. Then, the decompressed print data is output to a printer engine by a bitmap data transfer unit as video signals. The data storage capacity management unit optimally re-distributes storage capacity between two storage areas of the compressed print data storage unit and bitmap data storage unit, according to printing status signals, such as resolution, paper size, warm-up status of an engine, previous frequency of use, transfer speed and the like.

An image reading apparatus is attached to the top of a PDA. During the image reading operation, an operation state control signal is output from the image reading apparatus to the PDA. According to the signal, the intensity of an input display unit not required during the operation can be reduced. Additionally, the power supply or the supply of a signal not required during the operation is stopped. Furthermore, an LED of the PDA issues a notification of an operation state by lighting, blinking, or turning-off. When the input display unit displays an image, an erect image and an inverted image are appropriately switched depending on the operation state. During an image reading operation, input by input buttons and a touch panel of the input display unit are nullified to avoid the occurrence of a malfunction.

The present invention comprises an image reading unit for reading an image recorded on a medium, a gradation histogram generation unit for generating the gradation histogram distribution of the image data read by the image reading unit, a threshold value generation unit for calculating an appearance frequency ratio between the lowest gradation value and the highest gradation value from the image data read by the image reading unit, determining a threshold value level based on the calculated appearance frequency ratio and further determining the threshold value level based on the gradation histogram distribution generated by the gradation histogram generation unit, and a binarization unit for binarizing the read image data based on the determined threshold value level. Therefore, a threshold value can be generated based on the features of an image to be read, an optimal threshold value can be obtained depending on a medium and, as a result, a correct binarization process is available.

A document image data storing and controlling system including a document image data storing unit for storing document image data as partial image data which are areas divided according to the attributes such as a text, a graphic, a table, etc.; and a document image data rewriting unit for reducing the amount of the document image data by deleting the partial image data whose degree of importance of information is low, or by lowering its resolution in the document image data. By employing this system, for example, in a portable storage device whose storage amount is limited, a storage amount for new data can be secured while leaving effective information of the document image data.

An image reading apparatus comprises an image reading section which optically reads one line of an image on a paper at a specific time interval and inputs the acquired image data to an image signal processing section which converts the image data into a binary image data. An amount of movement detection section is provided which outputs a signal to an image data generation section when the image reading section moves by one line. When such a signal is received more than one time during one time interval, the image data generation section generates a binary image data corresponding to the number of lines whose data is not available from the binary image data for a line acquired during that time interval.
