The subject application is directed to a system and method for artistic scene image detection. First, image data is received that is encoded in a multi-dimensional color space. From the received image data, histogram data is then calculated. Dominant spike regions in the calculated histogram data are then identified. An N-sum value is then calculated from the identified dominant spike regions in the calculated histogram data. Testing of the calculated N-sum value against a predetermined threshold value then occurs. The received image data is thereafter classified as an artistic scene, a tinted artistic scene, or a sepia tone range artistic scene according to the testing results.

A method and system for constructing a color gamut allows the determination of the boundaries of the color gamut in color space for a color reproduction system having N-colorants. A forward model characterizing the color reproduction system is established and used to map a plurality of inkvectors from colorant space into color space. The color gamut is constructed by determining which of the mapped inkvectors define the boundaries of the color gamut in color space.

Each of the pixels encoded in the first color space is converted to a corresponding pixel encoded in a second multidimensional color space, the conversion further including transforming each of the pixels based upon a function of the pixel values in the first color space having component values defining a fractional relationship having a numerator portion and a denominator portion, with each portion including at least one of the component values. A value of each denominator portion is converted relative to a threshold value and the pixels encoded in the first color space are converted to the second color space with an alternative quantity selectively substituted for each denominator portion in accordance with the comparison.

First gamut data is received related to a first color gamut defined by a primary color space having no black component. Second gamut data is then received related to a second color gamut defined by a primary color space inclusive of a black component. At least one first color value of the first color gamut is then mapped to a second color value of a portion of the second color gamut disposed outside of the first gamut. At least one fractional black component value is then selected for each mapped color value. Non-black color data associated with each selected fractional black component is then identified. A sculpted gamut is then generated in accordance with each selected fractional black component and associated non-black color data. A color image is thereafter generated corresponding to received image data in accordance with the generated sculpted gamut.

The subject application is directed to a system and method for facial tone indexing. Image data comprised of a plurality of pixels encoded in at least a three dimensional component space is received and at least one candidate facial region is isolated in the received image data. The received image data is translated into a Lightness, Chroma, and Hue color space. Histogram data corresponding to the Hue of pixels is calculated in the at least one candidate facial region by discarding the low-chroma pixels first. The Hue index on which the Hue histogram peaks is identified as the Facial Tone Index. The Facial Tone Index indicates where the Hue concentration is and therefore is a single number representing the flesh tone of a face.

The subject application is directed to a system and method for isolating near achromatic pixels of a digital image. First, image data encoded as a plurality of pixels is received, with each pixel having component values in a multi-dimensional color space. From the received image data, chroma data is extracted. Histogram data is then calculated from the extracted chroma data. An adapted threshold value is then determined based upon the calculated histogram data. Component values of the plurality of pixels are then compared to the determined adapted threshold value. Isolation of pixels as near achromatic then occurs in accordance with the output of the comparison of the adapted threshold value to the component values.

A system providing a direct construction or calculation of color gamuts offering advantages over earlier techniques with respect to speed of calculations and the accuracy of the gamut description. The starting point for the gamut construction process is the calculation of a forward model from color patch measurement data which establishes an analytical relationship between ink and color in a given direction: ink to color. The model is used to obtain a regular sampling of profile connection space color values with corresponding inkings on the surface of the ink space polygon. These points are ordered by angle and by expected ink behavior to define the connectivity of the points of the gamut boundary.
