Abstract: A ceramic honeycomb filter comprising a ceramic honeycomb structure having pluralities of flow paths partitioned by porous cordierite cell walls, and plugs formed in predetermined flow paths of the ceramic honeycomb structure; the plugs being formed by ceramic particles and an amorphous oxide matrix existing between the ceramic particles; in a cross section of the plugs, an area ratio A1 of the amorphous oxide matrix in a longitudinal range of ⅓×t from one end, and an area ratio A2 of the amorphous oxide matrix in a longitudinal range of ⅓×t from the other end meeting the relation of ½≤A1/A2≤2, wherein t represents the length of the plug in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the plug.

Abstract: A method for producing a ceramic honeycomb structure comprising a ceramic honeycomb body having large numbers of longitudinal cells partitioned by porous cell walls, and a peripheral wall formed on a peripheral surface of the ceramic honeycomb structure, comprising the steps of extruding a moldable ceramic material to form a honeycomb-structured ceramic green body; machining a peripheral portion of the green body or a sintered body obtained from the green body to remove part of cell walls in the peripheral portion, thereby obtaining the ceramic honeycomb body having longitudinal grooves on the peripheral surface; applying a coating material to the peripheral surface of the ceramic honeycomb body to form the peripheral wall, as well as to peripheral portions of both end surfaces of the ceramic honeycomb body; and inserting the coating material applied to the peripheral portions of both end surfaces into peripheral cells, with partially remaining on the peripheral portions.

Abstract: A ceramic honeycomb filter comprising a cordierite-type ceramic honeycomb structure having large numbers of flow paths partitioned by porous cell walls, and plugs formed in end portions of predetermined flow paths of the ceramic honeycomb structure; the cell walls having a thermal expansion coefficient Tw (×10−7/° C.) of 10 or less in the flow path direction between 40° C. and 800° C.; the plugs comprising at least ceramic particles, and 5-25 parts by mass of an amorphous oxide matrix per 100 parts by mass of the ceramic particles; the ceramic particles comprising at least 42-90% by mass of amorphous silica particles, and 10-58% by mass of cordierite particles; and the amorphous silica particles comprising 4-30% by mass of first silica particles having a median particle diameter of 10-40 μm, and 70-96% by mass of second silica particles having a median particle diameter of 70-200 μm.

Abstract: A method for producing a ceramic honeycomb filter having a ceramic honeycomb structure having plugs in predetermined cells: comprising using an apparatus having a reservoir having an inlet for a plugging material slurry and an upper opening, a porous plate with pluralities of openings covering the upper opening of the reservoir, and a holding member fixed to an upper end of the reservoir; keeping a lower surface of the sealing film attached to a lower end surface of the ceramic honeycomb structure apart from an upper surface of the porous plate by a distance D of more than 0 mm and 2.0 mm or less; supplying a predetermined volume of the plugging material slurry into the reservoir to introduce it into the predetermined cells of the ceramic honeycomb structure; rotating the ceramic honeycomb structure after sealing of the ceramic honeycomb structure is released; and lifting the ceramic honeycomb structure after the rotation starts.
