Abstract: An electro-optic medium that may be incorporated into an electro-optic display. The medium includes a first microcapsule containing at least one of a first dispersion of colored particles and a colored fluid and an encapsulated second dispersion that may include the first microcapsule and a plurality of electrophoretic particles. The colored particles of the first dispersion may include one or more sets of differently colored electrophoretic particles. The second dispersion may be encapsulated within a second microcapsule or a microcell, for example.

Abstract: An electro-optic device, and its method of manufacturing, is disclosed comprises a first substrate layer, a conductive film comprising a first adhesive layer and a first electrode layer, an electro-optic material layer, and a second electrode layer. The first electrode layer, which is on contact with the electro-optic material layer, comprises a conductive material, such as conductive particles, a metallic material or a conductive polymer. The first adhesive layer has high storage modulus and does not exhibit plastic flow under the conditions of manufacturing, storage, and operation of the electro-optic device. The conductive film does not conform to the surface roughness of the first surface of the electro-optic material layer. The conductive film may be designed to be thin, flexible and transparent. The resulting electro-optic device exhibit excellent electro-optic performance even where the electro-optic material layer has imperfections in the form of gaps.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for fabricating a color-changing thread is described. The method includes providing an aqueous slurry including an encapsulated electrophoretic medium and a binder. The electrophoretic medium includes a first and a second type of electrophoretic particles. The first type of electrophoretic particles have a different charge and color than the second type of electrophoretic particles. The method also includes injecting the aqueous slurry into a fluid reservoir holding an aqueous cross-linker, and forming a hydrogel matrix that entraps the encapsulated electrophoretic medium within a cross-linked binder. The apparatus includes a body housing multiple reservoirs for holding materials used to form color-changing microcapsule threads. Solutions of materials are dispensed simultaneously with a cross-linking agent through a multi-chamber needle form the threads by an ionic cross-linking reaction.

Abstract: An electro-optic media includes either a plurality of microcapsules in a binder, a polymeric sheet containing sealed microcells, or droplets in a continuous polymeric phase. Each of the microcapsules, microcells, or droplets contain a dispersion that includes a plurality of charged composite particles and a suspending fluid, and the charged particles move through the suspending fluid under the influence of an electric field. The composite particles include one or more types of pigment particles that are at least partially coated with a polymeric material. Each of the binder, polymeric sheet, continuous polymeric phase, the charged composite particles, and the suspending fluid have an index of refraction, and a difference between the index of refraction of the composite particles and at least one of the binder, polymeric sheet, continuous polymeric phase, and solvent is less than or equal to 0.05 at 550 nm.
