Abstract: Tin oxide (SnO2) is etched by forming a layer of a metal such as aluminum on the portions of the SnO2 surface to be etched, and then contacting the metal with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. Passage of a current through the tin oxidemetal composite as cathode while in contact with the solution as electrolyte may be employed to speed up removal of SnO2.
