    Abstract: An electronic device may include a proximity sensor and a display. In particular, the display may be deactivated when the device is near a user's head. However, the proximity sensor may operate through or near the display and may detect the user's finger. Therefore, to distinguish between the user's finger and head, a motion sensor, such as an inertial measurement unit (IMU) may be used. For example, the position, acceleration, and rate of rotation of the device may be measured by the IMU, and a machine-learning algorithm may take the position, acceleration, and rate of rotation as inputs to determine whether the proximity sensor is triggered by the user's finger or head. In response to determining that the proximity has been triggered by the head, the display may be deactivated. Alternatively, in response to determining that the proximity sensor has been triggered by the finger, the display may remain on.

    Abstract: A wearable electronic device such as an earbud, wristwatch, or other device may be provided with a skin sensor. The skin sensor may use optical measurements to detect the presence of skin adjacent to the electronic device. The sensor may have first and second light-emitting devices such as infrared devices that emit light at respective first and second infrared light wavelengths. Reflected light is monitored by a photodetector. Control circuitry can initiate or pause audio playback or take other actions in response to determining from the reflected light measurements that skin is present. The sensor may have a thin-film interference filter or other optical structure that overlaps the first and second light-emitting devices to narrow the angular spread of light emitted from the skin sensor. This reduces tilt sensitivity and helps enhance skin sensor accuracy.

    Abstract: An electronic device may have a display system. The display system may include a waveguide, an input coupler, and a surface relief grating (SRG) structure. The SRG structure may be formed from a high-index material that includes titanium dioxide nanoparticles. To increase the refractive index of the high-index material, the ratio of the size of the nanoparticle core to the size of the capping layer may be increased. The high-index material may also include nanoparticles of different sizes to increase the packing density of the nanoparticles. The SRG structure may be depth modulated in a lateral direction to maximize efficiency. The SRG structure may include slanted ridges covered by an encapsulant. The SRG structure may include a blazed grating with ridges that are covered by a coating and encapsulated by an encapsulant.

    Abstract: An electronic device may include a proximity sensor for detecting whether an external object is in the vicinity of the device. The proximity sensor may be implemented as an optical sensor module having a substrate, a light emitter die mounted on the substrate, a light detector die mounted on the substrate, and a package enclosure housing the light emitter and detector dies within the module. A infrared bandpass filter layer may be formed directly on the light detector die. The light detector die may have sidewalls at least partially covered by an opaque coating. The light detector die may include a highly doped backside reflection absorption layer interposed between an intrinsic absorption layer and an n-type layer within the light detector die. Opaque adhesive material may be used to mount the light detector die onto the surface of the substrate.
