Abstract:
A splice connector includes a first coupling electrically connected to a first cable or conductor and a second coupling electrically connected to a second cable or conductor. Both couplings include at least one electrically conductive spade. The second coupling engages the first coupling so that the respective spades contact each other, thereby electrically connecting the two cables or conductors. Due to its construction and mass, this connector can be used in high temperature, high-G environments.

A washing machine with an improved mode shifter comprises a basket for holding an article to be washed, a basket collar coupled to the basket, an agitator disposed within the basket, an agitator collar coupled to the agitator, a brake for reducing a rotational velocity of the basket, a brake collar coupled to the brake, a first spring disposed around the basket collar and the agitator collar, and a second spring disposed around the first spring, the basket collar, and the brake collar. The mode shifter provides a mechanically simple, inexpensive, and reliable mechanism for shifting from the agitation mode to the spin mode to the brake mode in a wash cycle.
Abstract:
An energy-efficient refrigerator includes a refrigerator control system for generating refrigerator control signals responsive to cooling demands of respective refrigerator compartments; a refrigeration apparatus coupled to the control system; and a multiplex damper system disposed to selectively direct the cooling-air from the refrigeration apparatus to compartments in response to the refrigerator control signals. The multiplex damper system comprises a single movable control damper disposed to direct cooling-air flow to a single or multiple compartments. The evaporator and its associated fan and a variable speed compressor are independently controlled by the refrigerator control system. The variable speed compressor typically comprises a continuously variable speed motor such as an electronically commutated motor. The refrigeration control system is coupled to sensors, such as compartment temperature sensors, ambient condition sensors, and compartment access door sensors, so as to determine the cooling demands of respective refrigerator compartments, and generates control signals for the refrigeration apparatus, including, for example, compressor motor speed, evaporator and condenser fan operation, and other control functions.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an apparatus and method for directly measuring the bottom pour flow rate from heated ceramic crucible, hearth/tundish combinations used in metals refining/processing industry, plasma arc melting process (PAM), a cold hearth process or other similar processes such as for pouring ingots. Such structures of this type generally allow the bottom pour flow rate to be accurately measured in relative real time without adversely affecting the flow while withstanding the hostile surroundings typically associate with a heated crucible, tundishes, PAM, cold hearth process or other similar processes.
Abstract:
A fluid-handling machine, such as a dishwasher or clothes washer, measures liquid load by detecting liquid pressure oscillations. The machine, which includes both a frame for containing articles and a system for circulating or distributing a liquid in the frame, shuts off flow of liquid provided to the frame when the detected liquid pressure oscillations substantially cease, as determined in accordance with a fuzzy logic control strategy.
Abstract:
A machine, such as a dishwasher or clothes washer, incorporates a device for measuring machine load that includes a sensor for detecting power consumption surges. The machine may further include a frame for containing articles, a power utilization system for circulating or distributing a liquid in the frame, and a controller, responsive to the device, for controlling the amount of liquid provided to the frame.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a holder for turbidity sensors of the type used in machines for cleansing articles. Such structures of this type, generally, allow the turbidity of the liquid employed in the cleansing of the articles to be accurately measured without affecting the performance capacity of the sensor.
Abstract:
An energy-efficient refrigeration system includes an electrically controlled refrigerant storage device that is coupled to the refrigeration system to selectively receive refrigerant from and dispense refrigerant to the operating loop of the refrigeration system. The refrigerant storage device includes a storage vessel, means for selectively displacing refrigerant from the storage device into the operating loop, and a refrigerant storage device controller coupled to the means for displacing refrigerant so as to control the mass of refrigerant in the storage vessel in correspondence with the cooling demand on the refrigeration system so that the compressor drive motor is loaded for optimal efficiency for a given cooling demand on the system. The means for displacing refrigerant from the vessel of the storage device typically comprises a temperature control element, such as a heating element or solid state heat pump, that is electrically coupled to the controller and thermally coupled to the vessel. Alternatively, a bladder mechanism is disposed in the vessel for physically varying the volume of the vessel in which refrigerant can be stored in correspondence with signals from the controller.
Abstract:
An energy-efficient refrigeration system includes an electrically controlled thermal expansion valve disposed in the refrigerant piping so as to control flow of refrigerant in the refrigeration system, and an expansion valve controller coupled to the expansion valve to provide control signals to the valve. The controller includes a refrigerant temperature sensing device coupled to the refrigeration system so as to sense a flow control temperature corresponding to the refrigeration temperature at a flow measurement site so that the controller generates control signals to control valve position to provide optimum refrigerant flow for a particular operational mode of the system. The thermal expansion valve includes a heating element that is responsive to control signals from the controller and that is thermally coupled to a thermal expansion medium so that the medium expands upon application of heat from the heating element.

A system and method are provided for detecting and interrupting an out-of-balance (OOB) condition in a washing machine. The system includes pneumatic generating units for generating a predetermined fluidic pressure in response to excursions of a tub of the washing machine during a spin cycle; an actuator which is fluidly coupled to such generating units for providing an actuating position corresponding to the OOB condition; and a switch responsive to the actuator in its actuating position to deenergize a motor which spins the basket for holding the articles to be cleansed and thereby interrupt the OOB condition.
