Abstract: A system for portioning a beaded substrate in a rod. The system includes a suction conveyor belt. The suction conveyor belt includes a belt suction chamber, a first belt end, and a second belt end, the second belt end opposite and downstream of the first belt end. The system also includes a metering device configured to provide the beaded substrate to the suction conveyor belt, and more specifically to the first belt end. The metering device includes a reach and a hopper. The metering device may provide the beaded substrate to the first belt end prior to the suction conveyor belt biasing a filler material onto the first belt end. The system may further includes a cutting mechanism that cooperates with the metering device to position the beaded substrate a first distance away from a first cut end.

Abstract: Methods and compositions are provided for expressing an endolysin in a bacterium or in a tobacco plant or plant part. Expression of the endolysin can reduce the total bacterial load on the plant and in tobacco products produced from the plant. Accordingly, the level of tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) in a cured tobacco product can be decreased when the tobacco leaves used in the product were harvested from a plant expressing endolysin or when bacteria modified to express endolysin is used to treat the tobacco. Thus, bacteria and tobacco plants and plant parts are provided that express an endolysin. Further provided are methods for decreasing the microbial load on a tobacco plant and in a tobacco product by applying a solution of bacteria modified to express an endolysin or by modifying a tobacco plant to express endolysins. Smokeless tobacco products including such modified tobacco plant parts are also provided.

Abstract: Apparatuses are provided for manufacturing a rod member for a cigarette filter element. Each rod member defines a longitudinal axis and includes a generally longitudinally-extending filter material and a plurality of objects disposed therein along the longitudinal axis. Abstract: An aerosol delivery device is provided that includes a user interface including a pushbutton and a display. A control component contained coupled to the user interface controls operation of at least one functional element of the aerosol delivery device. The control component controls the display to present a menu including a plurality of menu items selectable using only the pushbutton. Each menu item of the plurality of menu items is associated with a respective functional element of the aerosol delivery device, and the control component is configured to navigate the plurality of menu items, and select a currently-presented menu item of the plurality of menu items for control of the respective functional element, in response to respective first and second types of presses of the pushbutton, the first and second types of presses being of different durations.

Abstract: Disclosed are aerosol delivery devices for use with a removable and replaceable cartridge, where the device includes an improved mouthpiece, such as one that is removable or customizable. The device includes a holder defining a receiving chamber configured to receive a removable cartridge comprising an ignitable heat source and a substrate portion that includes a substrate material having an aerosol precursor composition configured to form an aerosol upon application of heat thereto and a first aerosol passageway and a mouthpiece with a first end and a longitudinally opposed second end defining a second aerosol passageway, where the first end is configured to engage with a user's mouth and the second end is coupleable to the proximal end of the holder. The mouthpiece can be removed for cleaning and then reattached for continued use or, in some cases, a different mouthpiece may be attached to customize the user's experience.

Abstract: Smoking articles are disclosed herein. The present disclosure is directed to a smoking article that comprises a heat source configured to generate heat upon ignition thereof, a substrate material having opposed first and second ends, the heat source being disposed proximate the first end of the substrate material and the substrate material having an aerosol precursor composition associated therewith, a mouthpiece, the mouthpiece being disposed proximate the second end of the substrate material, and a heat transfer component. In one implementation, the heat transfer component comprises a hollow structure and opposing first and second flanges located on respective ends thereof, wherein the hollow structure extends through the heat source such that the heat source is located between the first and second opposing flanges. In another implementation, the heat transfer component is located within the heat source, penetrates at least a portion of the substrate material, and includes a cap located between the heat source and the substrate material.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for recovering tobacco material from tobacco rod sections is provided, each tobacco rod section including a wrapping paper wrapped about the tobacco material. The apparatus includes a centrifugal object-orienting device including a disc disposed at an incline within a cylindrical container, the cylindrical container and the disc being rotatable about a rotation axis such that the rotating cylindrical container and disc impart centrifugal force to the tobacco rod sections, the tobacco rod sections being responsive to the centrifugal force to orient lengthwise. A first conveyor device is configured to receive and convey in a conveyor direction the tobacco rod sections, with the tobacco rod sections being oriented lengthwise relative to the conveyor direction. A slitting device is operably engaged with the first conveyor device and configured to lengthwise slit the wrapping paper wrapped about the tobacco material of each of the tobacco rod sections.
