An ink filling method for filling an ink cartridge with ink to be supplied to a recording head for ejecting ink includes providing an ink cartridge having a negative pressure producing material accommodating portion and an ink accommodating portion, the negative pressure producing material accommodating portion accommodating a negative pressure producing material and being provided with an air vent, and the ink accommodating portion being substantially hermetically sealed except for fluid communication with the negative pressure producing material accommodating portion, and accommodating directly the ink to be supplied to the recording head, the ink cartridge further includes a partition wall between the negative pressure producing material accommodating portion and the ink accommodating portion, the partition wall being provided with a gap for permitting formation of meniscus of the ink; and directly injecting the ink into the ink accommodating portion.

An ink jet cartridge comprises an ink jet head unit for discharging the ink, and an ink tank unit having an ink supply port for supplying the ink to the ink jet head unit. The ink tank unit has a partition portion for partitioning between an ink storing portion for storing the ink to be supplied to the ink jet head unit and a negative pressure generating member receiving portion having a negative pressure generating member. The ink supply port is provided on the negative pressure generating member receiving portion. The partition portion has an ink communicating portion at an end portion of the partitioning portion on the side of the negative pressure generating member receiving portion where the ink supply port is provided, and makes contiguous the ink storing portion and the negative pressure generating member receiving portion in a movement direction of the ink tank unit when discharging the ink.

A container for containing printing liquid for supplying to an ink jet head for an ink jet recording apparatus. The container includes first and second chambers, with the first chamber containing negative pressure producing material and having an air vent communicating with ambient air and a supply port for supplying printing liquid to the ink jet head. The second chamber communicates with the first chamber via a communication port and provides a printing liquid reservoir for the first chamber. In an area adjacent a wall extending from the communication port, a capillary force provided by the negative pressure producing material decreases in a direction perpendicular to and towards that wall at least adjacent a part of the communication port which is uppermost when the container is in use.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an assembly method, for head units mounting a plurality of head chips for discharging ink onto a frame, in which relative positions among head chips are determined and which the head chips are secured onto the frame so as to maintain the relative positions, to an assembly apparatus for head units based on the method, and further to an ink jet output apparatus incorporating those head units. According to this invention, correction by each image output will not be required because the head unit is able to complete adjustments of shifts of arrival positions of ink at its assembling stage, thereby making the apparatus compact and simple. In addition, correction of positional shifts will not be required when the heads are replaced, so that maintenance of the ink jet output apparatus will be easy.

An ink container includes an ink storing portion for storing ink; an ink supplying portion for supplying ink to a recording head portion; an air vent for taking the atmospheric air into the ink container; and a hollow tube, one end of which opens to the atmosphere at the air vent, above the liquid level of the stored ink, and the other end of which opens within the ink container adjacent to the bottom portion of the ink container.
