Abstract: Collection user interface techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a plurality of inputs are recognized as gestures received via interaction with a user interface to navigate through a file system of a computing device and select representations of objects managed by file system of the computing device, at least two of which are accessible via different devices. In response, copies of the representations are displayed by the computing device in a collection portion of the user interface. An option is output in conjunction with the collection portion by the computing device that is selectable to initiate a command to be performed using the objects that have corresponding representations included in the collection portion.

Abstract: Computer-readable media, computerized methods, and computer systems for acting on properties of multiple resources, which span disparate locations within a network, upon detecting an intuitive user-initiated operation are provided. Initially, a library is provided that includes a framework for contemporaneously accessing a collection of items within a scope thereof. Upon launching the library, representations of the scoped items are surfaced at a UI display. When the user-initiated operation is applied at one of the surfaced representations, properties of each of the scoped items are automatically manipulated. A library-configuration state, which reflects how the items are affected upon manipulating the properties thereof, may be updated upon implementing the manipulation. Accordingly, if the scope of the library is subsequently extended to encompass another item outside the original collection of items, the properties of this new item are automatically manipulated to align with the library-configuration state.

Abstract: An OS generates a file dialog in response to a request from an application program. The file dialog has a format with a dedicated extensibility region. Multiple user interface controls from a predefined collection of UI control types can be placed within the extensibility region. An application requesting display of a file dialog requests one or more controls of the types in the predefined collection. The OS then places the requested controls in the extensibility region of the displayed dialog. The application need not provide data explicitly indicating the positions within the dialog of the requested controls.

Abstract: A metadata management architecture. The architecture includes a property component that lists one or more properties related to a file, and a viewing component that present files having one or more of the related properties. A synchronization component provides immediate synchronization between property editing fields of the property component and a view in the property-based browser component, providing both instantaneous feedback on property changes and an ability to manipulate properties graphically. Thus, a change in the property pane is immediately reflected in the view component, and a change in the view component is immediately reflected in the property pane.

Abstract: A system and method for a rules based engine which allows a user to act on and set rules with regard to data items. Known rules engines have typically only been applied to single item types (e.g., e-mail). The rules engine of the present invention provides a user with a way to build up sets of items from within a common store of items, and to develop common actions on items conforming to the sets. The common store of items may include different types of items, such as e-mails, documents, items constructed for arbitrary business workflow, etc. The invention allows a user to automate business practices or work flows (e.g., “notify me when items like this appear” and/or “automatically back up these types of items to my server”).

Abstract: Methods, and computer-readable media for presenting search results in a folder hierarchy are provided. Embodiments of the present invention include providing a navigation portion in which data sources to be searched are selected, and an input portion into which search criteria may be submitted. Items within the selected data sources that match the search criteria are identified and presented as a folder hierarchy. The folder hierarchy may only include items that satisfy the search criteria, but otherwise is consistent with the native folder hierarchy in which the items normally reside. In one embodiment, the initial presentation of the search results includes only top-level folders that contain, at some level, items that satisfy the search criteria. The items can be located by drilling down from the top-level folders.
