    摘要: An improved device, system and/or method for modulating fuel injection rate through fast magnetostrictive actuation is provided. A fluidomechanical coupler uses fluid to operably couple a magnetostrictive element and a needle element. The fluidomechanical coupler permits the needle element to move from a closed position to an open position when the magnetostrictive element is actuated from a default length to an expanded length. The fluidomechanical coupler is configured to translate an input force into an output response in a direction opposite the input force. The fluidomechanical coupler includes input shafts each within an input bore and positioned adjacent to the magnetostrictive element, a movable output shaft within an output bore and positioned adjacent to the needle element, and fluid passageways connecting input bores and the output bore. Displacement of the fluid between the input bore and the output bore applies or removes a force on the output shaft.

    摘要: A method of minimizing the cold start delay and impact fatigue of an actuator includes calibrating the actuator by initially raising the temperature to a desired operating temperature through induction heating of the actuator rod. Additionally, a control system for a magnetostrictive actuator includes a rod of magnetostrictive material, a solenoid coil wrapped at least once around said rod, and a controller operatively connected to said solenoid coil wherein the controller detects an impact of the rod with another surface and adjusts the operation of the actuator to minimize the potential for additional future impacts. The rod may be segmented and include end caps to further reduce the potential for impact fatigue.

    摘要: A high speed and high force magnetostrictive actuator is the preferred source of continuously controllable motion for the hydromechanical portion of a diesel fuel injector. The actuator converts continuously variable voltage and current into continuously variable force and displacement. A magnetostrictive actuator advances the state of the art of fuel injection by exerting continuously variable control through-out each injection event, including very fast transients free of overshoot or ringing. From rest, magnetostrictive fuel injector actuators have been tested to extend to their full distance of tens of micrometers without ringing and return to their rest position at near zero velocity. Complete cycles, from rest to rest, can occur in well under two hundred microseconds. A method of detecting fuel pressure takes advantage of the continuous variability in certain properties of the magnetostrictive alloy.
