摘要:
A method that enables the post to deliver letters, flats, post cards and packages (mail) addressed to a recipient's virtual post office box and then to be delivered directly to the recipient. The process enables individuals or entities to rent a virtual post office (VPO) box i.e., a box that does not physically exist, from the post office (“post”). Mail addressed to the virtual post office box would be captured by the post during the post's sortation process and rerouted to the specified address of the renter of the virtual post office box.

A system is provided for stacking mail having an escort assembly for handling each mailpiece. The system comprises a containment device, a transport mechanism and a detachment mechanism. The containment device includes a base, vertical walls extending from the base and an open end for accepting the mailpieces therein. The containment device, furthermore, has a slot formed in at least one of the vertical walls thereof. The transport mechanism includes first and second transport segment, the first transport segment conveying escort assemblies and respective mailpieces over an open end of the containment device and the second transport segment lowering the escort assemblies and respective mailpieces into the open end of the containment device. The transport mechanism furthermore aligns the edges of the mailpieces along one of the vertical walls of the containment device and positions the escort assembly through the slot of the containment device. The detachment mechanism is operative to release the mailpieces from the respective escort assembly and move the escort assemblies through the slot of the containment device.

A system and method for feeding and sorting mail pieces, and for moving the mail pieces to sorter bins according to delivery information on the mail pieces, includes a plurality of feeders, and a plurality of sorters configured to receive and sort the mail pieces from the feeders. A separating mechanism is configured to separate the feeders from the sorters in order to provide a plurality of pathways, so that each of the feeders is connectable by pathways to substantially all of the sorters. Each sorter includes sorter bins, and each sorter bin receives a subset of the mail pieces. Also included is a mechanism for selecting the pathways according to the delivery information read from each of the mail pieces.

A sorter, method, and software product are provided for sorting mail pieces. The mail pieces are fed into a sorter, sorted, and then deposited into mail trays. The mail trays are then moved from the deposit area to a dispatch area, in the order they will be loaded into a truck. That order is preferably the same as the order in which the containers received the mail pieces.

A mail sorting system, method, and software product are provided for transitioning from an earlier phase to a later phase of mail sortation. Information acquired during the earlier phase is used in order to calculate, while continuing the earlier phase, a transition time. At the transition time, there would be sufficient remaining time to perform the later phase, in order to meet a deadline for completing the later phase.

A mail sorting device and method (FIG. 1) comprising a reader (20, 24), a plurality of holders (28) for receiving mail in a generally vertical orientation, and a sorter (26), wherein mail pieces held by said holders are sorted according to sequence into interim unloading stations and then wrapped and encoded with the respective delivery address.

A mail stack unloading device for use in a mail stacker to unload a stack of mail pieces in the mail stacker. The mail stacker has a pair of stack supports, located at a small angle from a vertical line, for supporting the mail stack as the mail pieces enter the mail stacker along a stacking path when the stack supports are in a stacking position. The stacker also has a platform or tongue connected to the stack supports such that the platform is positioned beneath the mail stack below the stacking path. During unloading, the platform is caused to move upward beyond the stacking path in order to engage with the stack, allowing the stack to be lifted. Then the stack supports are caused to forward beyond the vertical line in order to tip the lifted stack into a container.

A method for producing a continuous web of printed material for use in creating mailpieces. The continuous web has a width and a length, the length comprised of a series of attached sheets. The series of attached sheets are comprising envelope sheets and rectangular content pages. The content pages are rectangular in shape and may be oriented relative to the envelope sheets in a number of different configurations. In some configurations, two sets of content pages and/or envelope sheets can be printed across the width of the web. Sheets for forming business return envelopes may be printed in series with the content pages and envelope sheets. BREs may include individualized return addresses. A control code may be printed on one or more of the sheets for a given mailpiece, providing information for controlling assembly of the mailpiece. Two sets of sheets may be printed across the width of the web by printing content pages onto the continuous web such that two end-to-end content pages are printed across the width of the web. Positioning of mail content pages and envelope sheets for a given mailpiece may be optimized based on respective processing times determined for the system.

A sorting system accepts a group of mail pieces at a loading station, sorts them, and then moves them to an unloading station. The system includes a reader for retrieving delivery information associated with each mail piece, and also includes clamps dimensioned for receipt of a mail piece into each clamp. The system has a device for creating an association between the retrieved delivery information of each mail piece and its respective clamp. The system also has a sorter for moving the clamps holding the mail pieces, based upon the association of each clamp with the retrieved delivery information, so that the mail pieces held by the clamps are sorted according to a desired delivery sequence. Additionally, the system includes a mechanism for opening the sorted clamps to release the mail pieces at the unloading station.
