An apparatus and method for changing the orientation, height and direction of envelopes conveyed in an inserter system. The invention reorienting horizontally transported envelopes to a vertical position. The envelopes then being transported around a turning arrangement comprised of a length of driven belt urged against a large diameter idler wheel. A turning guide serves to aid the envelopes through the turning arrangement. A ramp module comprised of nips having toroidal outer circumferences elevate the vertical envelopes. The envelopes finally are turned 180 degrees to be sorted into sorting bins. The overall arrangement of the invention results in an output sub-system of an inserter system with a shortened footprint and ergonomically desirable layout. Also, features of the invention provide that envelopes avoid damage and jamming and that recently closed envelope flaps do not inadvertently open.

Apparatus for receiving sheets fed in a first direction and guiding and controlling the sheets through a right angle turn includes at least one right angle turn over module which includes a lower plate with an input belt assembly for receiving the first documents conveyed thereto in a first direction; an upper plate including a 45.degree. turn over section cantilevered above the lower plate, and a turning guide positioned adjacent to the turn over section. The upper plate includes a plurality of output rollers rotatably mounted in the top of the upper plate and oriented for moving sheets at a right angle direction to the first direction. The turning guide includes an upwardly curved edge that extends a fixed distance from the turn over section for guiding sheets around the turn over section. An output belt assembly is suspended above the upper plate for conveying sheets in a second direction that is orthogonal to the first direction. The output belt assembly includes an endless belt moving around at least two rollers and further including structure for applying a normal force to the lower reach of the belt directly above each of the output rollers in the upper plate whereby the upper belt and the output rollers cooperate to convey the sheets out of the turn over section of the upper plate. The output belt assembly cooperates with the output rollers for conveying sheets received from a sheet feeding source that is in line with the output belt assembly.

Apparatus for transporting documents along a paper path includes a plurality of in-line idler rollers biased against a corresponding plurality of in-line driven rollers. The in-line idler rollers are mounted to an in-line transport assembly that is cantilevered over a paper path on a deck. The in-line transport assembly includes a plurality of idler shafts rigidly and transversely suspended over the paper path between two end plates. The in-line idler rollers are rotatably mounted to arm members that are secured to the idler shafts in pairs above the deck. Guide structure is located at the downstream end of the in-line transport for preventing the documents from skewing and lifting away from the deck as the documents are transported. The transport also includes structure for enabling and disabling the in-line transport.

Apparatus for transporting documents through a right angle transfer includes a deck, first transporting structure for transporting documents over the deck in a first direction, and second transporting structure for seizing control of the documents from the first transporting structure and transporting the documents over the deck in a second direction that is at a 45.degree. angle to the first direction. As the documents are released from the control of the second transporting structure, third transporting structure transports the documents in a third direction that is orthogonal to the first direction,. A guide strap extending in the second direction between the second transporting structure and the third transporting structure prevents the transported documents from skewing or lifting away from the deck. The second transporting structure includes a plurality of idler transfer rollers biased against a corresponding plurality of driven transfer rollers. The idler transfer rollers are mounted adjacent to each other on a plate extending in the third direction with the idler and driven transfer rollers being angled in the second direction. The guide strap is a flat spring having a curved end suspended above the deck adjacent to the second direction transporting structure. The other end of the flat spring is secured to the deck outside a paper path of the document. The second transporting structure includes structure to enable and disable the second transporting structure. The first, second and third direction transporting structures move the documents at a constant speed through the apparatus.

Continuous operation of the conveyor in an inserter system is achieved by providing a lift up station (LUS) between a Document Entry Device (DED) and the next downstream Multiple Document Entry Device (MDED). A controller causes the LUS to remove documents from the conveyor when it is determined that the time, t.sub.2, required by the MDED to complete assembly of an enclosure for ejection onto the conveyor exceeds the time, t.sub.1, required by the conveyor to move the document ejected by the DED to the MDED, and subsequently causes the LUS to replace the documents onto the conveyor at a time substantially t.sub.2 -t.sub.1 later.
