Abstract: Exemplary multimeter-wave acoustic resonators and methods employing intermediate layers in the fabricating of piezoelectric devices based on thin-film lithium niobate/lithium tantalate or aluminum nitride/scandium aluminum nitride on a substrate in a film stack that can use higher order first and third antisymmetric bulk acoustic tones. In some embodiments, the acoustic resonator comprises a base substrate of a material with low electromagnetic loss, a piezoelectric film layer that is suspended over the base substrate, and an interdigitated electrode (IDE) array formed by a pair of independently addressable microelectrode arrays disposed on a top surface of the piezoelectric film layer to resonantly vibrate at a range of frequencies greater than 6 GHz. The piezoelectric film layer was formed over an intermediate or sacrificial layer positioned between the base substrate and the piezoelectric film layer and then etched to provide the piezoelectric film layer suspended over the base substrate.

The integral molten salt nuclear reactor further includes a reactor section configured to receive the volume of fuel salt from the drain tank and cause fission reactions that heats the molten salt. The integral molten salt nuclear reactor further includes a heat exchange section configured to receive a flow of the heated fuel salt from the reactor section and remove heat therefrom.

Abstract: The invention relates generally to an allele on human chromosome 9 associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease and the use or detection of such an allele in determining whether a human has an increased risk for coronary heart disease. In one aspect, the invention relates to methods for detecting a predisposition or propensity or susceptibility for coronary heart disease in a human, comprising detecting the presence of an allele on human chromosome 9 that is associated with an increased risk for coronary heart disease in a human. Disclosed are methods and compositions for determining whether a person carries an allele associated with increased risk for coronary atherosclerosis by determining whether the person has an RA-CHR9 allele, such as by determining whether the person has an RA-CHR9 allele-associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). The invention also relates to kits for detecting the presence of an allele on chromosome 9 associated with an increased risk for coronary heart disease.

Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for detection of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) in a patient, the apparatus comprising: an endotracheal tube; at least two non-selective electrode contacts located in proximity to each other within the endotracheal tube, the contacts lacking any structural feature or component that particularly recognizes a chemical or biological species; an electrical subsystem that is capable of generating, receiving and processing electrical signals; wiring for connecting each of the electrode contacts with the electrical subsystem; and tubing for insulating the wiring from any sputum material that is introduced into the endotracheal tube by the patient.

Abstract: A method and system for calibrating nuclear instrumentation of a reactor is disclosed. The system comprises a reactor configured to operate at a low power level and an external heater configured to heat the reactor to its operating temperature and maintain the reactor in a critical state. The reactor maintains its temperature at a steady state by repeating steps of reducing the heater's power and increasing the reactor's power by changing one or more reactivity settings, wherein the reduced heater's power is compensated by using the increased power generated by the reactor itself. The nuclear instrumentation is configured to measure the reactor's output power and compare it with the calculated reactor's power. Based on the discrepancy between the calculated power and the measured power exceeds a threshold; and the nuclear instrumentation is appropriately calibrated by adjusting one or more settings.
