An apparatus for handling yarn during axial unwinding of the yarn from a yarn package at an unwinding device of a textile machine includes a device for restricting laterally outward displacement of the yarn. The restricting device is mounted to at least one of a pair of chamber portions which surround the yarn package during unwinding of yarn therefrom and preferably includes a vertically extending plate shaped to define a yarn receiving area for confining the path of the yarn being unwound. The plate guides the yarn from the inner wall of the chamber formed by the chamber portions into the yarn receiving area. According to another aspect of the invention, a device is provided for engaging a traveling yarn during unwinding of the yarn from a yarn package to eliminate loops, snarls and the like. The engaging device includes a pair of arm members, a pivot assembly for pivotally supporting the arm members for posed pivoting movement and a component for pivoting the arm members toward one another into a guiding position for guiding the traveling yarn and for pivoting the arm members away from one another to a non-engaging position.

A memory chip for storing information relating to an individual textile package and a device for manipulating the package and a chip reading device to access the information stored on the memory chip are provided. The memory chip can be loaded with individual package information such as, for example, the time, date and machine location at which the package was produced and the information can preferably be extinguished from the memory chip for loading of the memory chip with individual information concerning another package. To this end, the memory chip is preferably removably secured to the textile material or the tube of the textile package for subsequent removal for reuse on another package. The manipulating device moves the package and the chip reading device relatively to one another so that the chip reading device enters a reception area of predetermined size and location relative to the memory chip in which it can read, extinguish or supplement the information stored on the memory chip.

A tube support member conveying apparatus is provided for a textile machine which includes an unwinding device for unwinding packages of textile material such as yarn which is wound on tubes and a yarn end loosening assembly for loosening a yarn end on a yarn package to facilitate subsequent unwinding of the yarn therefrom. The tube of each yarn package is individually supported in a generally upright disposition on an independently movable tube support member. The tube support member conveying apparatus includes a conveying device for conveying the tube support members from a delivery assembly which delivers the tube support members for feeding to the unwinding device through an unwinding location at which the yarn packages are unwound by the unwinding device to a discharge assembly for transporting the tube support members to a further handling location. The conveying device supports each tube support member at the unwinding location in a predetermined disposition upstanding from the conveying device. Additionally, the tube support member conveying apparatus includes a tilt device selectively extendable into a position to effect tilting of the respective tube support member at the unwinding location so that the yarn is moved into contact with the yarn end loosening assembly for facilitating loosening of a yarn end therefrom.

A method and apparatus for detecting and utilizing the bobbin circumference of cross-wound bobbins or cheeses in a textile machine producing the bobbins includes determining and evaluating the attained circumference of the cheese from measured values produced by sensors detecting the growth of the cheese. The measured values are continuously detected and processed and optionally stored in memory in at least one computer for further evaluation. A mathematical linkage symbolizing the current bobbin circumference cleansed of randomness in the current measured value pickup at very short time intervals based on the measured values for each winding station is continuously and repeatedly performed anew in the further evaluation. A parameter from the group consisting of current bobbin circumference, bobbin radius or bobbin diameter is calculated from the linkage. The linkage result is used with as little delay as possible for at least one purpose from the group consisting of displaying the result, and/or affecting the winding process, and/or detecting the yarn length and/or terminating the winding process.

An aperture assembly can be positioned between the light emitting element and the slot to channel the emitted light. A method and apparatus for supplying sliver to the spinning stations of a spinning machine to wind a batch of a predetermined number of packages includes a sliver can transfer device, a sliver can conveying device, a sliver can filling device and a computer for controlling the operation of the various sliver can handling devices. Each spinning station is initially provided with a sliver can having a differing amount of sliver therein than the other sliver cans as the winding of the packages of the batch is commenced. The spinning stations are then continuously individually provided with fresh cans of sliver having a uniform amount of sliver therein during the normal running of the batch. The computer executes a batch ending program to determine an individual finishing quota of packages to be wound at each spinning station and controls the sliver can conveying device, the sliver can transfer device and the sliver can filling device to deliver a final can of sliver to each spinning station for the spinning station to complete its individual finishing quota of packages. The final can of sliver provided to each spinning station contains a predetermined quantity of sliver which is selected such that the final can is substantially empty upon the winding of the last full package of the individual finishing quota of packages at the respective spinning station.

The driving apparatus is thereby particularly adapted for peripheral driving of a conical bobbin during winding, at least two of the annular drive bodies preferably being utilized for peripheral driving engagement with the bobbin. A yarn traverse winding apparatus for a textile machine producing cross-wound bobbins includes a yarn traversing zone having reversing points. A traction mechanism transmission has an endless traction mechanism being diverted outside the traversing zone by guide rollers between a first belt run movable in a given traversing direction and a second belt run movable parallel to the first belt run in an opposite traversing direction. The belt runs have inner surfaces facing toward each other and outer surfaces facing away from each other while in the traversing zone. Yarn are drivers mutually spaced apart along the traction mechanism and a yarn guide element transfers yarn at the reversing points from a yarn driver on one of the belt runs to a yarn driver on the other of the belt runs. The guide rollers include two first inner guide rollers each guiding and contacting the outer surface of a respective belt run and two mutually spaced apart second outer guide rollers each returning and contacting the inner surface of a respective belt run before the belt runs reach the first guide rollers. The traction mechanism is moveable between the second guide rollers in the vicinity of the first guide rollers.
