Embodiments that relate to displaying holographic keyboard and hand images in a holographic environment are provided. In one embodiment depth information of an actual position of a user's hand is received. Using the depth information, a holographic hand image representing the user's hand is displayed in a virtual hand plane in the holographic environment. In response to receiving a keyboard activation input from the user and using the depth information, the holographic keyboard image is adaptively displayed in a virtual keyboard plane in the holographic environment at a virtual distance under the holographic hand image representing the user's hand.

The inventors have discovered a method to improve image quality in holography and, for the first time, utilize lenses made from birefringent materials to advantageously split an incoming beam of either coherent or incoherent light into two coincident beams with different focal lengths that interfere with one another and thus create holograms free of electro-optical or pixelated devices. This discovery has many advantages over current methods to create holograms in which many components, including multiple lenses, other electro-optical devices, and/or beam paths are necessary to create holograms. The current invention provides a purely optical holographic process which has better performance and holographic simplicity, in addition to being able to miniaturize holographic processes more than is currently possible in state of the art holography systems.

A method and device for measuring the mobility distribution of particulate elements using incoherent light holography, where the particulate elements are optically labeled. An elementary hologram is formed for each particulate element at a series of periodic moments representing the transfer function as a function of the instantaneous position of that element. The transfer function is modulated by a specified periodic transfer function for labeling each simple hologram and for generating conjugate elementary holograms integrated at each moment for forming a compound velocity hologram containing coded information for each particulate element. Each compound velocity hologram is decoded to obtain specified mobility information.

The invention relates to a spatial light modulator device comprising a photo-refractive crystal addressed by means of a write light beam and a read light beam. The crystal is placed in the cavity of an interferometer system having a transmittivity-optical path length characteristic of steep slope so as to give rise to a dynamic range of maximum transmittivity variation for minimum variation in the refractive index or optical path length of the photo-refractive crystal. The device is applicable to conoscopic holography systems of large dynamic range and to pattern recognition in real time.

A photorefractive device is provided for converting an image-bearing incoherent input beam to a high contrast coherent output beam the intensity of which varies as the square of the input intensity pattern. The device uses an incoherent image beam to write a holographic grating directly in a photorefractive medium. In one embodiment, a parallel, laterally displaced, telecentric system of lenses is used to split a quasi-monochromatic, incoherent image-bearing beam into two equal components. The two components are superimposed at the surface of the photorefractive medium to produce the hologram. In a second embodiment, the incoherent input beam is directed through a physically translating external grating to write the hologram in the photorefractive medium. The moving grating improves the diffraction efficiency of the hologram under the influence of an applied electric field and stabilizes the temporal response characteristics for signal processing. In both embodiments, the photorefractive medium is exposed to a coherent beam that picks up the image from the hologram and produces a coherent output beam having a high contrast replica of the input image.
