Disclosed herein is an improved coolant additive having corrosion inhibitive and scale preventative properties. In particular, the inventive additive in its various embodiments is specifically designed to avoid the use of silicates which, as is well known, form deposits which coat the surfaces and passageways of heavy duty diesel and other cooling systems, resulting in shortened life and reduced efficiency thereof. The inventive additive includes sodium hydroxide and/or alkal metal carbonate, ricinoleic acid, Reomet 41, Thiotax, various forms of SMA copolymers, sodium benzoate, sodium nitrate, chelant(s), antifoam agents, dye/pH indicator and soft water (composition solvent), mixed together in predetermined proportions with the various embodiments of the inventive additive including other constituent substances.

The invention provides a process for the sequestration of barium sulfate scale and barium sulfate sequestrant compositions therefor comprising an aqueous solution of citric acid (CA), a polycarbazic acid (PA), and an alklyenepolyaminopolycarboxylic acid (APAPCA), the weight ratio of CA to APAPCA being in the range from about 0.5 to 1 to about 11 to 1 and the weight ratio of PCA to APAPCA being in the range from about 0.002 to about 0.2, wherein the polycarbazic acid has the formula (R).sub.2 --N--[CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 N(R)].sub.m --R where R is the group CH.sub.2 --CO--NH--NH--COOH and m is 0 or an integer from 1 to about 4, and wherein the APAPCA has the formula (HOOC--CH.sub.2).sub.2 --N--[CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --N(CH.sub.2 --COOH)].sub.n --CH.sub.2 COOH where n is an integer from 1 to about 4. The preferred aqueous sequestering solution has a pH in the range from about 9.5 to about 14, said pH being provided by a base selected from the group consisting of potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, and mixtures thereof.

The polymer has repeat units characterized by the structural formulae: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is H or lower alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3); R.sub.2 is OH, OM, or NH.sub.2 ; M is a water soluble cation; R.sub.3 is a hydroxy substituted alkyl or alkylene radical having from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms or a non-substituted alkyl or alkylene radical having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; X is an anionic radical; Z is H or hydrogens or a water soluble cation or cations which together counterbalance the valence of X, and a is 0 or 1. The copolymer is effective in inhibiting the precipitation of certain scale forming salts, and also acts to inhibit corrosion of metal parts in contact with water systems.

Acrylic acid or acrylic acid/methacrylic acid is polymerized with between 5-95 mole percent of (meth)acryloyl morpholine to form polymers having a molecular weight range between 1,000-150,000. These polymers are extremely effective inhibitors for preventing calcium phosphate scale in boilers and on industrial heat exchangers. The above described water-soluble polymers are novel.
