Abstract: A method and a system are disclosed for making an article of manufacture from a blank defining an internal opening. A stack of blanks are aligned and the internal openings of the blanks in the stack of blanks are machined by a rotary cutting tool to a finished dimension. The blanks are clamped together before machining in a numerically controlled machine tool. The blanks are subsequently formed individually in a sheet metal forming operation in which the inner perimeter of the internal openings is expanded as the blank is formed.

Abstract: Provided is a frame which is made of a fiber reinforced composite and has an increased bending strength by suppressing occurrence of buckling. The frame which is made of a fiber reinforced composite includes: a compressive wall part where a compressive stress occurs in a longitudinal direction of the frame when the frame receives a bending load in a normal direction perpendicularly intersecting the longitudinal direction; and a side wall part extending in the normal direction and defining one of corners with the compressive wall part. The compressive wall part includes a longitudinal alignment layer having reinforcement fibers aligned in the longitudinal direction. The side wall part has a surface section composed of a normal directional alignment layer having reinforcement fibers aligned in a direction different from the longitudinal direction, and serving as a differential alignment layer.

Abstract: Devices and methods for absorbing crash energy via a side sill uniform deceleration unit (UDU) is disclosed. The UDU includes a first layer having a top and a bottom, the top of the first layer arranged to be outwardly facing towards a direction of a crash force when the uniform deceleration unit is installed in a vehicle, a second layer disposed on the bottom of the first layer, the second layer having a rib and web structure with a first arrangement, a third layer disposed on a bottom of the second layer, the third layer having a rib and web structure with a second arrangement, and a fourth layer disposed on a bottom of the third layer, the fourth layer arranged to be inwardly facing when the uniform deceleration unit is installed in the vehicle, wherein the fourth includes a reaction beam arranged to allow the first, second, and third layers to crush. The UDU may be installed in or positioned near the side sill beam.
