摘要: A nonwoven elastomeric web is provided. The web comprises thermoplastic elastomeric melt-blown small diameter fibers having a diameter of less than about 50 microns, the small diameter fibers being randomly arrayed and bonded at points of contact such that the tensile strength of the web in the direction of web formation is no greater than about 2.5 times the tensile strength of the web in a direction perpendicular to the direction of web formation and the web recovers at least about 85% in the machine direction after being stretched 50%. The web is particularly useful as wound dressing or bandaging materials.

摘要: A flexible tear resistance composite sheet material is disclosed comprising a web of thermoplastic microfibers with from 35 to 80 percent by weight of staple fibers homogeneously dispersed throughout the web. The composite is subjected to a sufficient quantity of heat and pressure such that the thermoplastic microfibers at least partially melt and compact into a contiguous sheet with the intact staple fibers being dispersed therein. Located throughout the sheet are a plurality of voids which act as tear stops. The resulting material has a void volume of about 33 to about 55 percent and a machine direction slit trapezoidal tear resistance greater than or equal to 1.7 kg per 100 g/m.sup.2 equivalent basis weight. Also disclosed herein is a process for making the composite sheet material.

摘要: Open-cell foamed particles and molded shapes having up to 99% porosity are formed from fumed oxides, for example SiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, TiO.sub.2, with or without functional groups, in 30-99%, by weight, and polymers, for example polyvinyl chloride and copolymers thereof, and styrene. The resulting structures are thermally insulating. The structures can be formed by beating small amounts of a liquid polymerizable monomer into the fumed oxide or by immersing a formed shape of the oxide in a liquid monomer and thereafter polymerizing the monomer to a solid polymer. The oxide is believed to have a microfibrous nature and the polymer is believed to coat the oxide, without destroying the open-nature configuration of the oxide, and cements the oxide particles together in the microfibrous condition.

摘要: An improved process for forming a non-woven fabric by wet-laying, on paper making equipment, staple length, synthetic fibers having a length to diameter ratio of about 400 to 3000, and an improved, non-woven fabric produced by the process. The process involves forming a stable, viscous, uniform, air-fiber-water dispersion by: adding the fibers to a high-shear agitated mixture of water and a dispersant to separate the fibers and to completely and uniformly distribute the individual fibers throughout the resulting, high-shear agitated, air, water and fiber mixture; and then, slowly adding a thixotropic thickener to the high-shear agitated mixture to form the viscous, air-fiber-water dispersion, having a nascent viscosity of about 10 to 125 cps., when measured at a shear rate of 30.5 sec..sup.-1, and in which the individual fibers are restrained from becoming entangled and from forming knits, bundles, and strings.

摘要: Nonwoven disposable wiper intended primarily for industrial applications and having a reduced tendency to accumulate metal chips or other small, sharp foreign objects. The wiper results from a combination of a meltblown microfiber web laminated to at least one web of interconnected aligned split filaments, such as a fibrillated thermoplastic film or foam. The combination is pattern bonded and includes a surfactant for improved wiping properties. The combination of the split flamentary web and microfiber web results in increased safety since injuries due to metal chips picked up by the wiper material are minimized. This is accomplished without significant deterioration of the wiping properties of the meltblown material.
