Abstract: A parachute flare in the form of a projectile or shell which is separated while in its flight trajectory from a carrier part while spinning rapidly about its axis. A tubular casing attached to the flare houses a main parachute and comprises a plurality of separable parts which are normally held together by a securing means including a relatively thin-walled annular container member. In a preferred embodiment, the plurality of casing parts are all secured at an end thereof to a disc-shaped member by means of an encircling sleeve having an inwardly disposed edge portion fitting into an annular recess on the disc-shaped member. Bevel-shaped pins passing through the sleeve and into the plurality of parts are held in position by the container member. When the latter member is moved longitudinally to free the pins, such pins are removed as a result of the longitudinal forces acting upon the bevelled surfaces of the pins, thereby permitting removal of the disc-shaped member so that the plurality of parts forming the tubular casing can then be separated by centrifugal force.

Abstract: There is disclosed a parachute-borne flare assemblage air-lifted by being fired from a rifled gun barrel. This assemblage comprises a hollow projectile which houses the flare package proper. The package includes the flare composition, a main parachute for supporting the flare composition, a drag parachute for reducing the forward velocity and brake flaps for reducing the spin velocity imparted to the projectile when fired and thus also to the flare package and persisting after ejection of the flare package from the projectile. The flare package is ejected as a unit from the projectile by an ejection charge a predetermined time after firing of the projectile, or in other words, when the projectile has reached a selected point in its trajectory. Further ejection and ignition charges free at timed intervals the brake flaps for reducing the spin velocity and the drag chute for reducing the forward velocity of the ejected flare package. Also at timed intervals, components jacketing the package while in the projectile are released and thrown clear by the centrifugal force acting upon these components after ejection from the projectile. Finally, the main parachute unfolds and supports the flare composition which is ignited by an ignition charge, the ignition of which is initiated by the firing of the ejection charge ejecting the flare package as a unit from the projectile.

Abstract: An aerial bomb having a casing equipped with auxiliary airfoil surfaces hingedly mounted thereto, and movable between a retracted position in flush relation to the bomb casing and an extended position oriented at an angle-of-attack to the air stream to provide a lifting force to, and thus retard the fall of, the bomb and its subsequent explosive impact with the target area to thereby allow the delivery aircraft to reach a safe position.

Abstract: An improvement for an aerodynamic missile, such as a torpedo, wherein the missile has a main parachute which is contained by a container at the aft end thereof, the improvement including an initial stabilizing and velocity retarding parachute releasably folded about the container; and means releasably retaining the stabilizing parachute to the container. The container may be constructed of a flexible material such as cloth, and an improved means may be provided for releasing the main parachute from this container.

Abstract: A triggering unit is provided which will release at a preset time a device it is carrying such as a braking parachute. The triggering unit is housed in a missile capable of being fired through a gas or liquid medium and comprises a primary release mechanism which is connected to a slidable rod. The rod is arranged in the missile housing so that it must move against a force set up by the medium through which the missile passes or the friction forces between the rod and the housing. The rod, which is triggered by the primary release mechanism, will move a specified distance necessary to release the device carried by the unit. The time required for the shaft to move the specified distance is controlled by the forces against which the shaft must move.
