摘要: A method for inducing the setting of planktonic bivalves onto a substrate is disclosed. Planktonic bivalves, which have reached the competent pediveliger stage, are exposed to certain 1-substituted-3,4-dihydroxylbenzenes at a sufficient concentration to induce setting. The preferred concentration is at least about 10.sup.-8 M with no upper limit and the preferred compound is 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine.

摘要: A reusable plastic rearing panel applicable to aquaculture comprises a molded plastic panel having a plurality of recesses therein for nurturing and rearing rock scallops and other filter feeding bivalve mollusks with similar habits from juvenile stages to marketable adult size. At the bottom and sides of the recesses are defined perforations for relief permitting attachment of the contained bivalve by the bivalve's cementation. The recesses in the panels are covered by mesh to contain and protect the shellfish and to afford at the same time opportunities for feeding on waterborne sources of nutrition, such as natural plankton. The meshing is removably attached so that after affixation of the shellfish to the recess, it may be removed; alternatively, the mesh is fabricated of material which naturally disintegrates under the chemical and physical conditions in which the panels are utilized. To augment attachment of the shellfish to the recesses, a line is tied through two of the perforations in bottoms of the recesses so that as the shellfish grows, shell material is deposited around the line until it is incorporated securely in the shell. Use of such a line affords the capability of employing the invention in connection with rearing shellfish which do not cement to firm substrates. Pluralities of panels may be arrayed vertically or horizontally in an aquatic environment and may be attached to pilings or secured by buoys.

摘要: An open framework enclosure is provided and defines a plurality of laterally spaced side-by-side sets of vertically spaced elongated horizontal cavities open at one set of corresponding ends. At least one open top tray is slidingly removably received in each of the cavities through the open ends thereof and the upper portions of corresponding adjacent cavities of adjacent sets of cavities are horizontally communicated and the upper and lower portions of adjacent vertically spaced cavities are in direct communication with each other. The trays include foraminated bottom, side and end walls and the enclosure defines structure for preventing movement of the trays between corresponding laterally spaced cavities, outwardly of the remote sides of the endmost cavities and outwardly from the ends of the cavities remote from the open ends thereof. Further, structure is provided for releasably lockingly retaining the trays within the enclosure against removal from the open ends of the cavities and the trays are sufficiently closely vertically spaced to prevent natural shellfish predators from entering the trays.

摘要: A process for culturing abalone (phylum Mollusca, class Gastropoda, family Haliotidae); other gastropod molluscs including, but not limited to, conch (class Gastropoda; genera Strombus, Cassis, Charonia and others), Chilean "loco" (Concholepas, concholepas); sea urchins (phylum Echinodermata, class Echinoidea, order Cidaroidea) and other marine and aquatic motile benthic animals of economic and scientific importance in which larvae, when sufficiently developed to settle from swimming to crawling animals, are introduced into a bath of relatively pure water. Preconditioned settlement surfaces are provided in the bath that encourage the settling and metamorphosis processes and support life thereafter. The larvae are preferably introduced into the water in time-spaced batches, food is supplied, high quality water is supplied, waste products and unwanted detritus are continuously removed. Food may be grown in-situ and high quality water levels may be assured by photosynthesis involving exposing phytoplankton that is growing upon surfaces in the bath to artificially supplied light.

摘要: Apparatus and method for the farming of clams comprising heavy trays preferably of concrete, which rest on the bottom land under the water and are stacked apart to allow the water to circulate above each tray. The trays are first filled with sand, in which the clams are placed, then covered with a layer of gravel to somewhat protect the clams from predators, as well as prevent the rapid current from shifting the sand.
