摘要: A self contained light source consisting of a metal cylinder, preferably aluminum, encasing a battery threaded into one end of the aluminum cylinder there being a non conducting insulator which is manufactured to fit into bore of a commercial transparent archers nock. Located in hollow bore of said commercial nock there being a L.E.D. which is energized by screwing nock assembly into aluminum cylinder there by completing electrical circuit. The L.E.D. is selected to impose the proper current demand on the battery, which by its size becomes self limiting and is unable to burn out the L.E.D., there by eliminating all other electrical voltage controlling devices. The above described components form a unit assembly which may be glued into any commercial tubular arrow with minor modifications to the arrow.

摘要: Arrow fletchings (42,102) disclosed have curved vanes (50,114) inclined inwardly in a rearward direction to provide pockets (54,118) for restricting air flow while allowing vane flexing in a manner that moderates drag in response to wind changes. One fletching embodiment (42) is preferably made by plastic extrusion and a subsequent heat forming process and includes a vane (50) whose inner portion projects radially from its foot (44) and whose outer portion define its curved pocket (54). Another fletching embodiment (102) made from sheet plastic includes a vane (114) that projects tangentially from the arrow shaft on which its foot (104) is mounted and is curved to define the pocket (118) that restricts air flow. A fixture (68) for heat forming the pocket of the one fletching embodiment (42) and a method for making the other fletching embodiment (102) are also disclosed.

摘要: An archery arrow having a collapsible tail assembly that includes an arrow shaft having three vanes adjacent its butt end that are generally symetrically located relative the shaft peripheral surface, each vane being made of a piece of semi rigid plastic or plastic cloth material that has axially elongated first and second edge portions secured to the shaft with the first edge portions being longer than, and extending forwardly of, the second edge portion and a loop portion extending angularly between said edge portions and extending away from the shaft to in conjunction with the shaft provide bounded areas of progressively smaller cross section areas in transverse planes that are perpendicular to the shaft axis in a rearward direction. The juncture of the loop with the first edge portion along its length is angularly offset relative the shaft peripheral surface so that as air passes through the vane when the arrow is being shot, the air imparts a turning force to the arrow. In the first embodiment, the vane first and second edge portions are angularly spaced while in the second embodiment the second edge portion is secured to the first. As to the third embodiment, which is the preferred embodiment, the vane loop portion instead of providing bounded areas of progressively smaller cross sections in transverse planes that are perpendicular to the shaft axis in a rearward direction provides bounded areas that are of at least substantially the same size and shape, if not the same size and shape.

The vane is prepared by injection molding in mold cavities with a reverse curve in the portion of the cavities which form the base of the vane which attaches to the arrow shaft so that the vane is straight or has a reverse curve after it is injection molded.

摘要: Disclosed is a new means to cause rotation of a missile as it moves through a fluid, which means maintains the missile in alignment with its direction of movement through the fluid. The means consists essentially of fluid-dynamically spaced elongated depressions in the gross outer surface of at least some portion of the trailing half of the mass of the body part of the missile. These depressions are aligned on the gross outer surface within an angle not greater than 30* from the axis of missile rotation. Each depression has a maximum width and maximum depth less than the length thereof, and also less than the radius of the circumference generated by rotation of the body portion of the missile at the location of the depression. Further, these depressions have a greatest depth portion radially-displaced with respect to a lesser depth portion and this greatest depth portion is forward of the longitudinal midpoint of the depression. The depressions are especially effective to guide the flight of missiles such as arrows, and can be used to replace the normal feathers or fins on standard archery arrows. Each special depression, during transit of the missile through a fluid, creates a resultant fluid-dynamic composite force vector which lies in a line not intersecting the longitudinal axis of rotation of the missile, but passing laterally to that axis. The composite force vector line of each depression passes that axis on the same lateral side, thereby effecting rotation of the missile.
