A reed for an air-jet loom which includes an entry flare allowing several main nozzles to be used. The reed has an inclination of the lower surface of an air guide channel, and an advantageous spacing between the binding spirals which support upper and lower ends of the reeds. The arrangement provides for effective, reliable multi-weft weaving, and can increase the weaving efficiency of the loom, particularly when weaving yarns with irregularities. In a preferred embodiment, the distance between the two binding spirals is approximately 81 mm, with the lower surface of the entry flare having an inclination of approximately 6.degree. with respect to a normal to the rear surface of the channel.

A picking period setting device for a loom to decide an appropriate picking period for satisfactory picking operations. A shedding curve calculating circuit is used which calculates shedding curves representing the shedding motion of heddle frames. A shedding stroke calculating circuit calculates a set of desired shedding stroke curves. An appropriate picking period deciding circuit decides a precise picking period defined by the crank angles of the loom on the basis of the result of comparison of the shedding curves and the desired shedding stroke curves. Thus, the weaving operation of the loom is continued without interruptions caused by faulty picking.

The reed teeth are formed in such a way that they have a first region for the guide channel and a straight section for seating-up of the weft thread. The profiling of the teeth allows secondary air streams towards the base of the weft insertion channels. This improves the stability of the thread by keeping the weft closer to the base of the channel.

This transport is effected by means of an injector, e.g. while inserting a weft thread into a weaving machine. In order to therewith keep the air consumption as low as possible the diameter of the discharge tube is made as small as possible. For nevertheless increasing the force imparted to the thread and thereby its directional stability the invention uses with an injector for subsonic inlet flow of the gas a discharge tube which widens along a very small conical angle, such that over its full length the gas obtains the speed of sound. With an injector for supersonic flow of the inlet gas this supersonic velocity is maintained along the full length of the discharge tube likewise by widening the discharge tube along a very small conical angle.The directional stability of the thread is further increased if, by keeping constant the cross-sectional area of the discharge tube, it is flattened in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the warp threads.

The invention relates to a procedure and device for the insertion of a weft thread into the space between two lines of warp thread in a weaving loom without using any shuttle.As per the invention, the thread to be inserted is fed to a pair of casting rollers forming between them a gripping line, with a guide being positioned above said rollers, and a gripping device being positioned so that the thread forms, between the above-mentioned elements, an acute angle with the gripping line of these rollers, and is positioned outside of this gripping line before being cast. In the loom, a thread guide channel is formed by upper plates and lower plates located in different cross-sectional planes of the channel. The lower plates are fixed to a sley, while the upper plates have their own guidance system formed in such a way that in each movement phase, points of the upper plates located furthest from the sley pivot point describe predetermined path lines which intersect the path lines of points on the lower plates furthest from the sley pivot point, so that during weft fastening the path line of upper the plates are at a smaller distance from the sley pivot point than in the weft insertion position of the sley. The upper plates are mounted on a pivot point on the sley and are pivotally connected by means of a connecting rod to another pivot point mounted extraneously of the sley.Despite the smaller sley travel, an adequate spacing of the plates of the thread guide channel from the weft fastening during insertion into the shed is achieved.

The mechanism of the invention is used with a jet loom having a synchronizing pulse generator, the mechanism including a system of two parallel branches each of which comprises a series combination of pulse-shaping circuit, power amplifier, a solenoid-control valve, and a weft inserting nozzle, each of the branches having an input which is connected to a respective one of the outputs of the synchronizing pulse generator.
