The planting head has legs which legs are provided with pins which may be in a first retracted position and in a second extended position, wherein in a first step the planting head is brought above the rootball surface; in a second step the distance of the distal ends of the legs to the central axis of the planting head is reduced; in a third step the pins are inserted into the rootball; in a fourth step the distal ends of the legs are brought closer together; after which the rootball is taken out of the first rootball container and deposited into the second rootball container. The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method.

An apparatus configured to facilitate removal of a growing medium and the root structure of a plant surrounded by the growing medium while maintaining the integrity of the growing medium and root structure. The apparatus comprises a U-shaped connector body having a first blade and a second blade extended down there from. The first blade has a first end and a second end to which the first end of the U-shaped connector body is connected. The connection of the first blade to the U-shaped connector body is at an angle causing the first blade to extend downward when the U-shaped connector body is positioned horizontally. The second blade has a first end and a second end to which the second end of the U-shaped connector body is connected. The connection of the second blade to the U-shaped body is at an angle causing the second blade to extend downward when the U-shaped connector body is positioned horizontally. The apparatus is configured such that the distance between the first and second blade may be decreased upon applying pressure to the first and second ends of the U-shaped connector body. Decreasing the distance between the first and second blades allows for the positioning of the blades to facilitate insertion of the first and second blades down a sidewall assembly of a container cell. During insertion of the first and second blades into a container cell, the first and second blades are positioned between the interior walls of the cell sidewall assembly and a growing medium that surrounds a plant root structure. Applying pressure to the first and second ends of the u-shaped connector causes the first and second blades to press against the growing medium and facilitate removal of the growing medium upon the lifting of the apparatus.

In use soil is placed in a planting tube with seedling thereby creating a potting medium. A field transplant system including a machine for sequentially forming groups of polymerized soil plugs having seed receiving recesses in one end thereof and supported on a carrier, and in certain cases interconnected by strips, the carrier being used to transport the soil plugs through a seeding station and then to a germination station and then to a growing station either in the flat or on a plant turning machine in a greenhouse to grow the germinated seeds to transplant size, and then using the carrier to transport the soil plugs with the transplants growing therein to the field for transplanting by an automatic transplanter; several forms of soil plugs are disclosed, and several methods for supplying seeds to the soil plugs are disclosed, as well as an improved method of mounting a mat of soil plugs on the cylinder of a plant turning machine.
