    摘要: Systems and techniques for generating optical pulses exhibiting a progressive phase shift, and the use of those pulses to transmit data, are described. One embodiment of the invention employs a Mach-Zehnder modulator using electrical signals chosen to introduce a predetermined frequency shift at the center of each pulse generated by the pulse generator. This frequency shift is achieved by introducing a timing difference between the electrical input signals. Another embodiment of the invention employs a chirp free pulse generator and a separate phase modulator to induce the desired frequency or phase shift. These progressively phase shifted pulses may be further modulated to transmit data by introducing phase or amplitude modulation on the optical pulses, depending on the data to be transmitted.

    摘要: The invention, relates to a method for optical fiber communication. An optical signal having chirping determined by a chirp parameter is output to an optical fiber transmission line. The optical signal transmitted by the optical fiber transmission line is converted into an electrical signal. A bit error of the electrical signal is detected. Then, the chirp parameter is controlled so that the bit error detected above is reduced. According to this method, the chirp parameter is controlled so that the bit error detected is reduced. Accordingly, a chirping occurring in the optical fiber transmission line can be suppressed by the chirping of the optical signal to be output to the optical fiber transmission line, thereby compensating for chromatic dispersion and nonlinearity.

    摘要: An optical modulator for producing a modulated optical output having a pre-determined frequency chirp comprises: optical splitting means for receiving and splitting an optical input signal to be modulated into two optical signals to pass along two waveguide arms (36, 38) made electro-optic material; and optical combining means for receiving and combining the two optical signals into said modulated optical output. At least one electrode pair (40/44, 42/44) is associated with each waveguide arm (36, 38), and is electrically connected in series such as to modulate the phase of said optical signals in antiphase in response to a single electrical signal (Vmod) applied thereto. The modulator is characterised by a capacitive element (60) connected to the electrode pair (42) of one arm (38) such as to modify the division of the single electrical signal (Vmod) such that the magnitude of the electrical signal across the electrode pail (42/44) of one arm (38) is different to that across the electrode pair (40/44) of the other arm (36) thereby imparting the pre-determined frequency chirp in the modulated optical output.

    摘要: A dual stage optical modulator is disclosed that uses optical predistortion to achieve a high degree of linearity and also provides signals having substantially no residual phase modulation, or chirp. The modulator allows fiber optic transmission over fibers having a zero dispersion wavelength that is significantly different from the operating wavelength of the source laser without a chirp-induced dispersion penalty. In one embodiment of the modulator, an input Y-junction splits an optical input signal into a first interferometer, also referred to as a phase/intensity modulator, having first and second interferometer arms and an electrode structure for modulating the split signal. The electrode structure includes a pair of ground electrodes and a modulating electrode for receiving a first RF modulating voltage and associated DC bias. The modulating electrode is positioned between the interferometer arms but is offset from the center of the arms for providing a first asymmetric electro-optic effect through the introduction of intensity modulation and residual phase shift in the split signals. The split signals are then mixed in unequal proportions in a directional coupler and are separated into a second phase/intensity modulator that is substantially similar to the first, but which receives a second RF modulating voltage. The signals from the second phase/intensity modulator are again mixed in unequal proportions in a second directional coupler which couples the signals and provides first and second optical output signals. Linearization is achieved through optical predistortion by adjusting the DC biases and attenuating the second modulating voltage with respect to the first such that any distortion generated in the first interferometer is canceled in the second interferometer. Chirp introduced in the signals by the first interferometer is reduced in the second interferometer and directional couplers and is eliminated in at least one of the output signals by appropriately selecting the amount of asymmetric phase distortion applied to the signal in each stage.

    摘要: A multi-quantum-well Mach-Zehnder optical phase modulator selectively generates positive and negative frequency chirp. The modulator has an asymmetric input y-junction coupler and an asymmetric output y-junction coupler joined by interferometric arms defining two optical paths of unequal length so as to generate a fixed phase difference of .pi. or an integral odd multiple thereof. The modulator has electrodes on each arm for receiving modulating electric fields in a push-pull relationship. A control electrode is provided on one of the arms for receiving a control electric field. The modulator, when driven without any control electric field generates negative frequency chirp, and selectively generates positive frequency chirp in response to adjustment of the control electric field. As an alternative, the length differential between respective arms can be selected to generate a phase difference of .pi./2, in which case control electrodes are required on each of the interferometric arms. A method of selectively generating a modulated optical signal having selectively configurable frequency chirp is also described.
