Abstract: An expandable rack mountable computing device for use in a variety of telecommunications and computing racks comprises a computing device chassis, at least one expandable baffle, at least one biasing mechanism, and at least one expansion mechanism. During installation of the computing device into a rack, the biasing mechanism holds the at least one expandable baffle in a retracted position at least partially inside of the computing device chassis. After installation of the computing device into a rack, the expansion mechanism pushes the at least one expandable baffle into a retracted position at least partially outside of the computing device chassis.

Abstract: In one embodiment, an apparatus includes a fan for cooling electronics within a chassis, the fan comprising a rotor with a plurality of fan blades connected thereto for generating an axial airflow during operation of the fan, a sensor for detecting failure of the fan, and an airflow blocking device positioned at an exhaust side of the fan and configured to prevent airflow through the fan upon detection of the fan failure, wherein the airflow blocking device is stowed in a position removed from a path of the axial airflow generated by the fan during operation of the fan. A method for preventing airflow recirculation at a failed fan is also disclosed herein.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes identifying optical transceivers installed in optical module ports at a network device based on input received at electrical interfaces at the network device, identifying at least one optical module port without an optical transceiver installed, determining if a plug is inserted into the optical module port, wherein an electrical signal indicates insertion of the plug into the optical module port, and raising an alarm if the optical module port is open. Insertion of the plug into the optical module port reduces airflow bypass, electromagnetic interference leakage, and contamination without the optical transceiver installed in the optical module port. The plug is also disclosed herein.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a method includes receiving an indication at a modular electronic system of initiation of online removal for a module removably inserted into a slot of the modular electronic system, increasing a fan speed at the modular electronic system before the module is removed, monitoring an internal temperature at the modular electronic system, and providing an indication that the module is ready for removal upon reaching a specified cooling state at the modular electronic system based on the temperature monitoring. A panel on an adjacent module is opened and extends into the slot upon removal of the module to substantially block airflow bypass from the slot and maintain cooling within the modular electronic system. An apparatus and logic are also disclosed herein.

Abstract: The present technology provides minimal touch cable guides for rack-mounted devices. The minimal touch cable guides disclosed herein provide structures for routing cables from field replaceable units installed in a rack mounted device in such a way that cables of different types are not crossed and provides a mechanism for adjusting installed cabling to permit access to otherwise obscured field replaceable units. Such adjustment of cabling is provided in a controlled manner that does not impair the performance the installed cabling.
