    摘要: A method and apparatus for detecting leakage from an evaporative emission space (14, 18) of a vehicle fuel system by utilizing naturally occurring vacuum that can occur under certain favorable conditions after a fuel-consuming engine (12) that powers an automotive vehicle has been turned off. If there is no leakage, vapor pressure in the fuel system will begin to decrease. If it is assumed that the vapor pressure was approximately atmospheric when the engine was turned off, and that no leakage existed, ensuing cooling will create increasing vacuum in headspace of the fuel tank as the temperature drops. In the absence of leakage, a well-defined relationship exists. Measurements of physical parameters (24, 26) characterizing fluid conditions in the fuel tank are taken as cooling proceeds and processed. Results are evaluated to obtain leakage information.

    摘要: A vapor collection canister vent valve contains both an electric pressure sensor for measuring evaporative emission space pressure during a diagnostic test and an electric actuator for operating the vent valve closed during a diagnostic test. Use of the valve in an evaporative emission control system reduces the number of connections, both electrical and fluid, that are required to install the valve in a system. The remote location of the pressure sensor damps the effect of pressure transients, such as those due to tank fuel slosh, on the sensor.

    摘要: A module for an on-board evaporative emission leak detection system that detects leakage from an evaporative emission space of an automotive vehicle fuel system, and corresponding method that calibrates a leak detection module pump to set a desired stroke of a moveable wall in the pump of such evaporative emission leak detection system. A pump disposed within interior space of the module has an inlet in communication with the interior space and an outlet that communicates through a flow passage with the evaporative emission space. A vent valve within the interior space is selectively operable to a first state that vents the flow passage to the interior space of the module, thereby venting the evaporative emission space to atmosphere, and to a second state that does not vent the flow passage to the interior space. An electromechanical actuator within the interior space operates the pump and the vent valve by respective magnetically responsive levers. An eccentric cam for calibrating a lever is disposed for abutment by an arm of the lever and turned to a position to secure a desired relationship between the pump and actuator.

    摘要: A vacuum sustaining valve (VSV) for temporarily sustaining at least some engine intake manifold vacuum to an EGR valve when engine intake manifold vacuum falls below a predetermined value. The VSV has an inlet port, an outlet port, and a flow path between the two ports. A check valve is disposed with the flow path and is selectively positioned in accordance with manifold vacuum. When manifold vacuum is above a predetermined magnitude, the check valve is positioned to allow bi-directional flow between the two ports. When manifold vacuum is below the predetermined magnitude, the check valve is positioned to function as a check that allows vacuum to pass from the inlet port to the outlet port, but not in the opposite direction.

    摘要: An on-board diagnostic system for an evaporative emission control system of an internal combustion engine powered vehicle employs a positive displacement reciprocating pump to create in evaporative emission space a pressure that differs significantly from ambient atmospheric pressure. The pump is powered by using engine intake manifold vacuum to force an intake stroke during which both an internal spring is increasingly compressed and a charge of ambient atmospheric air is created in an air pumping chamber space. Vacuum is then removed, and the spring relaxes to force a compression stroke wherein a portion of the air charge is forced into the evaporative emission space. The rate at which the pump reciprocates to alternately execute intake and compression strokes indicates the pressure and flow through a leak in the evaporative emission space. Detection of this rate serves as a measurement of leakage for the purpose of distinguishing integrity of the evaporative emission space from non-integrity. The disclosed pump has a novel arrangement of its internal valving that reduces the number of parts required in comparison to a previous pump.

    摘要: A technique is provided for detecting leaks in a fuel system such as an automotive fuel system. The technique complements an on-board diagnostics evaporative leak monitor that uses natural vacuum leak detection (NVLD). The technique utilizes the same switch and valve utilized by NVLD.Before engine shut-down, the system maintains a vacuum in the fuel tank and also provides a low-level purge flow. Upon engine shut-down, a timer is started and the NVLD switch is monitored to determine how long the vacuum is maintained in the tank. If the vacuum is maintained longer than a predetermined time period, then the system determines that the leak test is passed. If the vacuum decays faster than the predetermined time period, then the NVLD test is performed and system determines that the system passes the leak test if the NVLD test is passed.

A fuel vapor pressure management apparatus includes a housing, a pressure operable device, and a sensor. The housing defines an interior chamber. The pressure operable device separates the interior chamber into first and second portions, and includes a poppet that moves along an axis and a seal that is adapted to cooperatively engage the poppet. A first arrangement of the pressure operable device occurs during the leak detection test when the seal is in a first deformed configuration. A sensor detects the first arrangement of the pressure operable device during the leak detection test. And a processor is coupled to the sensor and reduces sensitivity of the fuel vapor pressure management apparatus during the leak detection test.
