Abstract: An optical system including a lighting component and a switchable diffuser in optical communication with the lighting component. The optical system may further include a low absorbing optical component. At least one outer surface of the switchable diffuser and/or the low absorbing optical component includes light redirecting structures. When the switchable diffuser is in a first state and the optical system produces a light output, the light redirecting structures are configured to increase the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the light output of the optical system in at least one direction by at least 5 degrees relative to that of an otherwise equivalent optical system that does not include the light redirecting structures.

Abstract: A driving apparatus according to an embodiment includes an arm, an operation target, and a brake unit. The arm has one end supported by a support mechanism, and includes an electric driving source. The operation target is attached to the other end of the arm, the other end being an end on the opposite side of the one end, and is enabled to be pivoted by the driving source about one rotational axis intersecting with a direction from the one end to the other end. The brake unit secures immobility of a target gear that is a gear disposed in the arm, and that is a gear being rotated as the operation target is pivoted, when the power supply to the driving source stops.

Abstract: A light source is provided with a digitally addressable lampshade that includes a plurality of regions of controllable opacity. Systems and methods are described for controlling the digital lampshade. In an exemplary embodiment, an addressable lampshade effects a time-varying pattern of changes to the opacity of the regions to generate a lamp identification pattern. A lamp is identified from the patterns by a camera-equipped mobile device. The mobile device then causes the identified lamp to generate a position-determining pattern of light. The mobile device determines its own position relative to the lamp based on the pattern of light received by the camera. The mobile device then instructs the digital lampshade, according to user input, to allow illumination or to provide shade at the determined position of the mobile device.

Abstract: Light-emitting component includes a light source and a dimming element arranged downstream of the light source in a radiation direction. The dimming element includes a dimming layer. The light source includes at least one emitter which is configured to emit light. A brightness of a light emitted by the light-emitting component is adjustable. The brightness is partially adjustable by way of a pulse width modulated and/or amplitude modulated operating signal for the emitter, and the brightness is partially adjustable by way of partial absorption and/or reflection of the light emitted by the emitter in the dimming element. A dimming capability of the dimming layer increases along an extension direction transverse to the radiation direction. The dimming layer is displaceable along the extension direction relative to the light source. A degree of absorption and/or reflection of light emitted by the emitter is variably adjustable.
